Pak stares at 'Non-NATO Ally' status cessation; Bill against Pakistan in U.S Congress

Only military in the world that makes money from its citizens getting bombed by a foreign power.

These fools are getting it back with interest. Needless to mention the state of Pakistan.

There is a distinction in all this talk about "begging". Now "asking" is bad but our ask is for "loans" that are returned with interest paid and not aid. So we aren't beggars in true sense of the word. Greeks and Argentinians (first world and second world respectively) have taken FAR bigger loans than Pakistan after defaulting. While we have taken loans and managed our economy, it has never defaulted alhamdolillah. And I have faith in the system.

So my gripe is not that we are "beggars" in the true sense of the word which is akin to living off aid. It's just that we need to break the kashkol for good. But for now, we need loans for fiscal space. Otherwise we have paid with interest for goods imported, whether it was F-16s, Erieyes, Turkish frigates, heavy machinery for manufacturing, locomotives etc. etc.

Our people, specially a certain demographic, have made a bigger deal out of asking for loans than it really is. Yes, our economy needs to be better managed, but all past government have sought loans to get fiscal space. Most countries of the world borrow and take out loans. As long as we fix the economy with these loans, I am fine.
I agree, that was sort of my point too

I see nothing wrong with assistance or loans as long as it's paired with effective reforms and being used in a productive manner.

It is a means to an end, many people here are not pragmatic in their approach, some literally suggest terming America an enemy and think it will somehow turn out well for them.

Having balls without brains is just stupidity

The Bill was introduced by Andy Biggs, a Congressman who is a member of the Republican Hindu Caucus. What exactly does the Bill say? How does a 'Major Non-NATO Ally' designation help a country? We explain

A US Congressman has recently moved a Bill in the House of Representatives to revoke Pakistan’s designation as a Major Non-NATO Ally. The Bill says that for the country to keep the status, the US President must submit a certification to the Congress that Islamabad has met certain conditions.

The Bill, HR 80, was introduced by Andy Biggs, a Republican who represents the fifth Congressional district of Arizona. Before it can turn into a law with a signature from the President, the Bill has to be passed by the House and the Senate. For now, it has been sent to the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

What exactly does the Bill say? How does having a ‘Major Non-NATO Ally’ of the US designation help a country? Who is Andy Biggs, member of the Republican Hindu Caucus? We explain

What the Bill says
The Bill says that Pakistan should be demoted from the major non-NATO ally status till the US President can submit a certification that it has met certain conditions

The conditions listed are: “Pakistan continues to conduct military operations that are contributing to significantly disrupting the safe haven and freedom of movement of the Haqqani Network in Pakistan; Pakistan has taken steps to demonstrate its commitment to prevent the Haqqani Network from using any Pakistani territory as a safe haven; the Government of Pakistan actively coordinates with the Government of Afghanistan to restrict the movement of militants, such as the Haqqani Network, along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border; and Pakistan has shown progress in arresting and prosecuting Haqqani Network senior leaders and mid-level operatives.

The Haqqani network is a terrorist group whose leadership is based in Pakistan, though it operates majorly in Afghanistan. The network came into being during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s and was armed and funded by the US and Pakistan to fight the Russians. After 9/11, Haqqani turned against the US. US officials have long considered the Haqqani leadership to be among the closest proxies for Pakistan’s ISI.

Major Non-NATO Ally status
Designation as MNNA entitles a country to some military and economic privileges. According to the US Department of State website, “Major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA) status is a designation under US law that provides foreign partners with certain benefits in the areas of defense trade and security cooperation… While MNNA status provides military and economic privileges, it does not entail any security commitments to the designated country

Who is Andy Biggs?
Biggs belongs to the conservative faction of the Republican Party, and was among the leaders subpoenaed by the House select committee investigating the Capitol Hill riots. Biggs was alleged to have been involved in plans to bring protestors to Washington, and for trying to persuade Arizona state officials that the 2020 election was “stolen.

Many Republicans have said that Joe Biden unseated Donald Trump in the last Presidential elections through unfair means, claims that have been debunked. Arizona was among the states the Democrats flipped in 2020.

A retired attorney, Biggs, before being elected to Congress, had served in the Arizona Legislature for 14 years. He is former chairman of the Freedom Caucus, considered to be the most conservative, far-right caucus of the Republican
Party in the US House of Representatives, and was among the lawmakers who recently disrupted fellow Republican Kevin McCarthy’s Speaker bid.

Biggs is also a member of the Republican Hindu Caucus, founded under the aegis of the Republican Hindu Coalition (RHC). The RHC, founded by industrialist Shalabh Kumar, seeks to “provide a single unified platform to build a strong, effective & respected Hindu-American voice in Washington and across the country”, according to its website, and supports Trump and the Republicans. In October 2022, Trump gave a Diwali speech organised by the RHC at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where he said he would nominate Shalabh Kumar as the Ambassador to India if was elected as President again in 2024.

Recently the biden administration have approved $450 million F-16 fleet sustainment programme to Pakistan. That needs to be scrapped asap
The military-industrial complex needs to be fed. India is not going to it, so why not Pakistan?

Everyone is picking a side. Whose side is the Pakistani army on?
Pakistan's.
The one with the most 💲💲💲
That is how the world operates. Otherwise why would the Americans court Gulf countries and they in turn the US? Or for that matter Turkey courting both The US, Russia, and also the Gulf? Or for that matter India. Wherever the money is, you go. Always was the case, always will be the case. Why have we tagged along with China now? Because they have money to invest.

All of the rest is bakvas i.e. sour grapes when you don't get the $ coming in.

Itni ghairat thee tau Salala may serve kartay aap bhi and we would have loved to see aap kiya karlaitay "foreign bombing" kay khilaf. That was a small reminder of what Americans could do to our conventional capability.

Talk is cheap when you don't have the wherewithal to take on the world's pre-eminent military power. In the absence of this wherewithal, empty slogans of "ghairat", "sell-out" come easy.

Americans bombed the hell out of 300 Russian soldiers in Syria. Remember that? What did the mighty Russians do? Nothing.
Americans killed Iran's preeminent general/leader in Syria. What did The Iranians do? They rang up the base before it was attacked so the Americans had ample warning to saunter into protective shelters. Why? You know why.

So think through these things before pointing fingers at our people.

We have a massive "economic" relationship worth at least $6B in Pakistani exports and $3B in US imports to our country. That is a decent size ~$10B relationship.
I think he is referring to the Economic aid packages and FMS program which is suspended since 2016. Actually the only convergence left is the counterterrorism cooperation. There is nothing else. USA has openly shifted to India as the counter to china.

America ka apna time araha ha ahista ahista, unka b haal syria jaisa hoga once the powers decide to close the laptops in usa, and re-open laptops in telaviv.
Bas itni si baat ha.

Well he was dialed in the wrong area because we benefit more from the $10B trade with the US vs. getting some limited economic and military assistance.

"Now this title is irrelevant as we very minimum diplomatic and economic relationship with the US."

They were bombing Afghans hiding in FATA.

Perhaps Pakistan should have secured the border instead of letting others clean up their mess.
Exactly. Imran Khan very conveniently leaves this part out in all his talk about bombings in FATA. This was a cost that had to be borne to have Taliban in Afghanistan. For wrong or right, that policy was in currency then.

Perhaps Pakistan should have secured the border instead of letting others clean up their mess.

And kill off or even limit the multibillion dollar off-the-books trade in drugs and smuggled goods whose proceeds reach far and wide into the elite of all kinds? No, thank you.

The successor to the British empire (USA), the treacherous dogs at GHQ must work harder to ensure India's Hegemony in the region, else no doggy treats.. oh and they'll continue to maul Pakistan for the nth time.. imperial boot lickers are only loyal to their foreign masters.. not the nation they were supposed to serve and protect. The blood of Mir Jaffar runs thick at GHQ, and let's not forget to their PDM spawn.. the DNA of loot and plunder is quite dominant as the current state of affairs show..
