Pak seems inclined to give MFN status to India: Commerce secy
Upbeat about the positive talks he held with his Pakistan counterparts on trade relations, Indian Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar, who returned from Pakistan after two-day secretary-level talks in Islamabad, said Pakistan has shown signs of according India most favoured nation (MFN) status. He said delegates from both sides discussed all trade related issues in a highly positive mood and deliberations are on between the Pak government and the business community there on MFN status to India.
India gave Pakistan MFN status long ago but the measure was not reciprocated. There is a strong viewpoint emerging in Pakistan on MFN status to India. The consultations are on in Pakistan. There may be some concrete decision on the issue by November, he said.
MFN status would bring down duties on Indian items exported to Pakistan, ease visa norms for businessmen and increase the total volume of trade. In general, it was felt that Indo-Pak trade is all set to see a steep rise in coming days. The two countries cant ignore each other for long. The direct trade between the two will pave for new prosperity and long-lasting peace also, said Khullar, adding that the talks would prove to be another confidence building measure (CBM).
The whole mood was positive. There was nothing during discussions which was not meant to push forward the trade relations, said Khullar, adding they discussed all specific trade issues, including infrastructure development on borders, more rakes for goods trains and lowering of duties to facilitate trade and normalisation of visa regime for the business community.
