Islamabad: An intelligence official was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on a busy thoroughfare in Quetta city of southwest Pakistan today.

Mohammad Nazir, an inspector in an intelligence agency, was pulled out of an auto-rickshaw and gunned down on Samungli Road, DIG (Operations) Hamid Shakil told reporters.

The gunmen escaped after the shooting.

A police team took the intelligence official's body to a nearby hospital.

In a separate development, police in Quetta uncovered a large cache of weapons and explosives that had been buried in the Eastern Bypass area.

City police chief Mir Zubair told reporters that the weapons were found when policemen conducted a raid after getting a tip-off.

The cache included Kalashnikov assault rifles, pistols, grenades, explosives and chemicals.

"Unknown armed men killed some police personnel in Satellite Town and Eastern Bypass areas of Quette a few days ago and took away their Kalashnikovs. These weapons were buried along with the cache," Zubair said.

Police teams had been formed to trace the persons who had buried the cache of weapons and explosives, he said.
