Pak govt to take over all madrassas: Zardari

WASHINGTON: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has said that all madrassas in the country would be taken over by the government to separate the
students from extremism and impart modern as well as religious education to them.

Speaking at a community dinner, Zardari said his government has resolved to bring reforms in the madrassa system and bring it under the government system.

Commenting on the ongoing military operation in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP) against the Taliban and other terrorist groups Zardari said the government would initiate every necessary step to pull the country out of the crisis and hand over a better Pakistan to the next generation.

“We are striving for reconciliation with all forces in Pakistan, rejuvenation of national institutions, reorganisation of Pakistan’s strength. We have a lot of strength but we have never allowed our full potential to be utilised for the good of the country,” The News quoted Zardari, as saying.

Zardari also claimed that Islamabad has shifted an ‘unspecified number’ of troops from its eastern border with India to fight against the Taliban.

Smart idea. Way to go government, finally some action!

I wonder what he means by "take over" though? A better phrase would be "government administration" like other private schools. Take over sounds like he'll trun them into government schools.

Excellent Finally.. thats where the ROOT of the problem lies.. These Madrassas teach nothing else other than religious education and when young kids come out of madrassas they have no skills or experiences how than are they supposed to find a job and put food on the table... Its one of the major reasons they resort to violence and join the Taliban because they at least get paid

What's really at stake here is redressing public education in a meaningful and tangible way.

If public education were accessible and delivered a soundly-based secular education of reading, writing, mathematics, basic sciences and literature, where would families with no means choose to send their sons-Madrassahs or schools such as these?

I wonder.

Build it and they will come?

I would personally prefer an extensively-funded public education system rather than attempt to save the madrassahs. Let them save themselves through competitive reform once they lose students who wish more than rote drill of the Koran.

It is practically impossible, these madrasah are self financed and after passing out madarasah student can earn more money for his family then university graduate.

here it is.. INO.com News - Madrasas Will Be Taken Over: Pak's Zardari

(RTTNews) - In an effort to clamp down on thousands of madrasas across the country that churn out Islamic terrorists and to separate the students from extremism and impart modern as well as religious education, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has said that all such seminaries in the country would be taken over by the government, reports say.

Speaking at a community dinner in Washington, Zardari said his government has resolved to bring reforms in the madarsas system and bring it under the government system. He also claimed that Islamabad has shifted an 'unspecified number' of troops from its eastern border with India to fight against the Taliban.

On the ongoing military operation in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province (NWFP) against the Taliban and other Islamic terrorist groups, he said the government would leave no stone unturned to pull the country out of this morass and hand over a better Pakistan to the next generation.

"We are striving for reconciliation with all forces in Pakistan, rejuvenation of national institutions, reorganization of Pakistan's strength. We have a lot of strength but we have never allowed our full potential to be utilized for the good of the country," Zardari was quoted as saying.

You would be surprised to know that in India, that even when there are public schools available (and in India, Schools DONOT teach anything about religion. Religious studies is not a subject in Indian govt schools), many people(all of them poor) still send their kids to the nearby madrassah.

This is because they think that their son will become a 'good Muslim' by studying in a Madrassah, and thus the Madrassah is opted over regular school. And ofcourse, most of these Madrassah's have their funding from Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries.

I think the same needs to be done in India-the Madrassah's need to be taken over by the govt, or they must be made to get some kind of certification from a National Board of some sort so that science, etc and other subjects are taught in a rational manner as well in them.

P.S: Fantastic news for Pakistan. A right decision taken by Zardari IMO.

Dont know whose line ZARDARI is following. But in short it will only start hundreds of 'JAMIA HAFSA ' like scenarios

Presently 25 million madrasah student are enjoying free education ,can Pakistan provide free education to these students:lol:

80% children dont go to school because they cant afford school and GOP also dont have funds.

Thats where the aid should go. Pakistan is getting a lot of aid now, it should be spent on these issues. It will go a long way in nation building.
