Pak exports of stones, marble, granites to China doubled in 2011

BEIJING: Pakistan's marble, stone and granite sector displayed an outstanding performance last year, as its export was more than double compared with 2010, as Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) took an affective marketing strategy to explore new avenues to expand the volume of country's export.

In 2010, Pakistan export to China in stone, marble and granite was $ 29.1 million, and it shoot up $ 63.5 million in 2011, showing a growth of 118 per cent, an official at Pakistan Embassy Beijing told APP on Monday

To further attract Pakistani entrepreneurs and exporters in this sector to China, the TDAP organized Pakistan's pavilion last week at the Xiamen International Stone Fair, the biggest stone and marble Expo in China, and the second largest in the world, said Commercial Counsellor at Pakistan Embassy Dr. Naeem Khan..

The Fair was held in Fujian province from March 6-9. The TDAP organized participation of five leading companies dealing with exports of marble products to China.

"This is for the first time that TDAP has participated in this event", Dr Nameed noted.

Pakistan Stone Development Corporation (PASDEC), led by its Chairman Ihsanullah Khan was also part of the TDAP delegation.

During the fair, PSDEC highlighted the opportunities for further development of Pakistan's marble and granites sector with the cooperation from China.

precious stones industry basically base in Gilgit and somewhere in Balochistan, swat as well...

although marble is found in Kalabagh, but the other day I ordered a piece of marble and all of factory owners were saying the local one comes from Balochistan...

You are right about Swat, I posted an article in this forum couple of years ago i think... which said we have reserves of minerals and precious stones worth 1 trillion dollar in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Northern Areas (including Swat). We have very little production of marble industry comparing to our capacity. If we are not producing/exporting enough marble is solely due to lack of industries in the country. The deposits are there but we need more industries and infrastructure to increase our production

Keep on cutting the mountains for producing cement, marbles etc and keep on exporting double and triple and one day there will be no more mountains left to help Monsoon season and westerlies clouds to bring rainfall into Pakistan. Once the rainfall pattern will change most of Punjab and Sindh can turn into deserts and then we will know the actual worth of exporting mountains to others.

Look what our Neighbour is doing to protect mountains, eco system and monsoon patterns in theri country and what we are doing???

India has stopped mining activties on Aravalli range of mountains just because of this reasons.

In May 2009, after months of media and public protests, along with several environmental groups, the Supreme Court banned mining in an area of 448 km2, across Faridabad, Gurgaon and Mewat districts in Haryana, that was once supposed to be set aside for a national park. This comes after SC's earlier judgment in 1994 that allowed limited mining on the basis of the sustainable development principle and under strict guidelines, which were violated by local miners as the court ruled.

You have raised a very serious issue in your post. Quarrying and mining in the Aravallis was one of the biggest contributors to increasing desrtification in Rajasthan. Post the SC ban on this activity, the problems have been controlled a little, but not completely eliminated. Fortunately, the SC has been very proactive in environmental matters. For instance, sand mining and quarrying in the Andaman and Nicobar Island chain is completely stopped, so sand required for construction has to be shipped from the Indian mainland. Adds to the costs but has helped to preserve miles of pristine beaches. Like wise the ban on tree-felling in Assam and Andamans and other parts of India has helped to reduce de-forestation.
