Pak bows to clerics, will shut brothels

ISLAMABAD: Already facing a multiplicity of problems, the Pakistan government has apparently decided to resolve the stand-off with a group of radical Islamic clerics by accepting one of their key demands of closing down all brothels in the capital city.

The government is ready to force the closure of brothels operating in Islamabad to meet one of the demands of the clerics of Lal Masjid who control a large madrassa in Islamabad as a quid pro quo deal for veiled girls of the seminary to end their occupation of a children's library in the city, local daily The News reported.

Pakistan Muslim Leaque-Q (PML-Q) president Shujaat Hussain, who has been roped in by the government to negotiate with the two pro-Taliban clerics Abdul Aziz and Abdul Rashid Ghazi, said that action would be taken against the brothels, but only after ascertaining facts, the paper said.

Hussain who took part in a high-level meeting attended by president Pervez Musharraf and PM Shaukat Aziz after his talks with the two clerics said he was quite optimistic about resolving the problem without resorting to an crackdown by the police against the madrassa and mosque.

Asked about the demands by the clerics to close down brothels, he said they would be shut if found operating in the capital city. He said the action would be taken only after the identification of a complainant.

The administration of Jamia Hafsa, had claimed that there were as many as 26 brothels in sector G-6 in Islamabad but without explaining how it discovered these spots.

Monday's meeting attended by Musharraf reportedly decided to rely mainly on negotiations for resolving the piquant situation created by the militant clerics and veiled girls students of the madrassa, who created a stir by issuing a fatwa against tourism minister Nilofar Bakhtiar for hugging a French paratrooper after a para jump in Paris.

Besides the stupi.d names Indian papers give. I find it good news, at least the govt. got a shove to move things along. Considering in 1 sector their are 26 brothels and in our capital for god sakes even in US in the city I live is their is only 1 brother for a population of 500,000.

About that paratrooper thats' going to far, already the govt. and other high clerics rejected the Fatwa.

Prostitution cannot be stamped out simply by shutting down the places where it currently takes place. It happens as a result of economic hardship; and the government should insure that whatever women are engaging in sex for money are given stable jobs. That's the most effective way to combat all sorts of illegal activites; provide jobs.

Brothels will never close. They are just humoring the clerics.

well if you don't agree with Indian news paper what would you call it.
government of Pakistan is bending back wards and i do mean all the way to the moon .to keep these mullahs happy why.
why most of the people come at this mosque to pray are exempt from all laws.
why even though they kidnapped people(last i checked kidnapping was crime in every country in the world)and police officers nothing happened.
why is this being protected at all expenses.
why so many ISI personals go to this mosque(build on illegally occupied lands) to pray.
where is there money coming from.
why our so called middle Eastern friends only wanna finance this kind of investment in Pakistan(while the dollars that create jobs are invested in west)
And 1 thing is for sure all that moderation crap.good luck with that.after this iam sure westren invester will flock towards pakistan.excellent job MR MUSH:disagree:

What if they closed the brothels without the Mullahs doing anything?

Why would investors run away from brothels shutting down? Though I'm sure its not going to happen. Presence of Brothels indicates a very third world society.

>> Presence of Brothels indicates a very third world society.

Plenty of nations in Western europe have legalized prostitution. That helps them regulate it and prevent STD's. Are those nations third world countries?

As George Carlin said:
I don't understand why prostitution is illegal. Selling is legal, F'ing is legal; so why is selling f'ing illegal?

^^ Not that I agree with this, but Carlin is hilarious! :D

Don't see whats the fuss about that these indian newspapers are creating. Whats bad about shutting down brothels? They shouldn't have to listen to mullahs to do that. Just do it themselves.

Aunty Shamim’s book to open Pandora’s box

Aunty Shamim, the alleged owner of a brothel in Islamabad, has put at stake the future of many “honourable” MPs who fear there would be a string of divorces in case she publishes a book carrying the names of her clients.

The gravity of the situation can be gauged from the fact that the treasury parliamentarians have discussed the issue with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. National Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain was also present when the matter was discussed at the residence of Nasrullah Khan Dareshak, following a dinner reception the other day.

A ruling MP from Sargodha said the publication of the book could trigger a large number of divorces with majority of the lawmakers being separated from their wives. He fears that Aunty Shamim is planning to author a book which would be published by the Oxford University Press. The book would be about her clientele and majority of them, what he fears, are MNAs, senior Army officers and judges.

“Mr prime minister, there would be at least 200-300 divorces if Aunty Shamim’s book gets published,” he said. Before making this disclosure, he sought the permission of the National Assembly speaker, saying he wanted to speak on a call attention notice. He also requested the female MPs to leave the place, saying there would be a bit “vulgar discussion” which, propriety demands, should not take place in their presence.

A female journalist-turned-lawmaker and spinster from a smaller province, refused to leave the place, not knowing exactly the contents of the “agenda”. So the discussion took place in the presence of the female MPs.

The said treasury lawmakers noted with concern that the fear of being exposed looms large over the Parliament Lodges that houses the rich clientele of Aunty Shamim. “Our one colleague may be spared who is not among the clients,” the treasury members said, while mentioning the name of a lawmaker. But that does not mean he is not a “colourful” person.

The Sargodah-based MP said this while making observation about the said MP, who has chances of being spared by Aunty Shamim. The Sargodha-based MP said the said MP was also a regular customer of a brothel, but that is relatively cheaper and one night costs him Rs 2,500 because he uses relatively cheaper “stuff”. But the Sargodha-based MP made it clear that he himself was not involved in this business. He, however, said his colleagues shared their reservations and see trouble ahead in case of publication of the book.

As the discussion by the honourable MPs was progressing, the prime minister enquired about the whereabouts of Aunty Shamim. “Do you know where Aunty Shamim is right now,” he asked his treasury colleagues who turned their heads towards each other, as if they did not know.

In an attempt to involve Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain in the discussion on the matter of “serious” concern, the prime minister said ladies would feel very comfortable and safe in the company of Shujaat. The ruling party leader got the point and raised his hand for seeking permission from Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain, who was presiding over the proceedings.

As the permission was granted, Shujaat sought clarification from the prime minister as to what exactly he meant? “There are two interpretations of your words. What do you mean?” Shujaat asked the prime minister, who he gave a smile instead of a reply.

When this correspondent contacted another MP who also attended the dinner for comments, he said there was no truth in the contents of the proposed book. Such attempts are being made by those who are against democracy and are out to defame members of parliament. He added that once the book is published “we will take the legal course against the author and defend ourselves”.

Aunty Shamim’s women spill the beans

Aunty Shamim, who is said to have many closely guarded secrets which have the potential of rocking the high and mighty of the country, was allegedly running a brothel.

It was learnt on authority that the woman uprooted recently by the Jamia Hafsa students used to lure young women searching for job to support their families. The agents of Aunty Shamim were on the look-out for young women who were hard-pressed by circumstances and wanted some job to feed their families. They were lured into this business with the promise of a job.

The modus operandi of the aunty is said to have been very discreet and safe. She was conscious of the fact that it would not be possible for a young woman to be away from house at odd hours, let alone for a night. She had fixed her business hours to coincide with the normal office hours.

This unusual sex business was open to all and sundry in G-6/1 Sector from 9am to 2pm sharp. Sunday used to be a closed day while due deference was paid to Friday as business was closed by noon. She allegedly enjoyed full protection of the Aabpara police as she greased the right palms. In return the police provided her protection.

She was known as a well-connected woman, as she was never touched by any law-enforcement agency despite several complaints lodged by the neighbours and others.

Background interviews reveal that the exploited women had to pay 70 per cent of the earnings to the aunty and could retain only 30 per cent as their “fee”.

The working hours were not displayed at the main entrance of the “centre”. These were, however, known to the regular visitors, including the uniformed policemen.

“I searched for a job for more than seven months after the death of my husband, who worked as a supervisor in a private firm. I failed to get a suitable job, as wherever I went I was overtly or covertly asked for sexual favours,” a young widow, 'N', told this correspondent in an interview.

“In the beginning, I fell into the hands of a dirty old man,” the widow in her late twenties said. “The old man had employed me as a personal secretary in his office in Blue Area but later exploited me sexually.”

Later, she was somehow introduced to Aunty Shamim, who received her affectionately and behaved like a "mother”. She was thus forced by circumstances to accept her offer. She agreed to sell her body to earn money as starvation loomed over her family. She had to feed her children as well as old parents. She told her in-laws and parents that she was working with a semi-governmental organisation.

“The aunty got 70 per cent of the total earned money because she paid as much as 35 per cent to the area police,” she alleged.

“It is a dirty but very lucrative job," she said and maintained, “In this trade in Islamabad one can make millions within a few months.”

Dozens of women were involved in this trade, she said, adding that most of them were educated and had told their families that they were employed in some private organisations. “The women spent five hours in the brothel during the ‘office timings’ and left an hour before the office hours,” she revealed.

“The police provided complete protection to the business and the business centre,” 'T', who used to be second-in-command of Aunty Shamim alleged.

“The police used to inform us well before time if there was to be any raid. In fact, the area police were running the sex trade,” she said and asserted, “No one could dare take on us because of the police shelter.”

Besides the young widow 'N', three other women, on Saturday met this correspondent in The News Bureau Office and claimed that they had been associated with Aunty Shamim and wanted to “expose” her.

Aunty Shamim was said to be so highly connected that she was never touched by any law-enforcement agency despite several complaints lodged by the neighbours and others. However, recently after she was kidnapped by the Jamia Hafsa students and made to announce that she would stop this business, Aunty Shamim left for some unknown destination.
