Pak Army kills 30 militants in South Waziristan attack

ISLAMABAD (updated on: January 16, 2007, 10:49 PST): Pakistani helicopter gunships attacked and destroyed three militant camps on Tuesday in a dawn swoop on a tribal region bordering Afghanistan, killing up to 30 fighters, the military said.

Spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan said helicopters attacked the camps in the tribal district of South Waziristan after reports that 25 to 30 local and foreign militants were there.

"I can't give you the exact number of casualties but most of them were believed killed," he said, adding that three of five camps were destroyed.

The spokesman said the camps had been under surveillance for days before the operation was carried out at 6:55 am (0155 GMT) Tuesday morning.

The strike came as US Defence Secretary Robert Gates was in Afghanistan to meet President Hamid Karzai and top military officials to determine the best way to tackle a Taliban resurgence in the war-wracked country.

The new US defence chief has expressed concern that a Taliban revival in southern Afghanistan and the slow pace of reforms and economic reconstruction under Karzai threatens gains made since the Taliban's ouster in December 2001.

Security officials said Tuesday's strike was launched on a compound in the remote town of Zamazola.

They said the camps housed more than 30 people, most of them "foreign terrorists."

If 8 militants were killed who were the remaining 22 dead.

Hundreds of angry tribesmen held a rally yesterday to protest against a Pakistani air strike on a remote town near the Afghan border, saying the dead were all innocent labourers. Some 600 people gathered in Tank, a town near the South Waziristan region, where the military said it had destroyed three suspected Al Qaeda hideouts occupied by 25 to 30 local and foreign militants. The protesters, including elders from the local Mahsud tribe, religious scholars and elected representatives, blocked traffic and chanted slogans against Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and US counterpart, George W Bush, witnesses said.
"The attack was unjust, it killed innocent people," tribal leader Dilawar Khan said.
He said the bombing had killed eight people and left several others wounded. Earlier, military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan said most of the 25 to 30 "foreign terrorists" and their local facilitators were believed to have been killed in the attack on the Zamazola town near the Afghan border. The tribal leader however insisted there wer e no foreigners and the victims were all "local labourers who were cutting trees when the raid was conducted." Khan said the tribesmen wanted to show the bodies to the media in Tank, but dropped the idea as they were burned in the air strike. He said local tribes abided by a two-year-old peace accord, but that the government had violated it "to appease the United States." The strike followed criticism from US intelligence director John Negroponte that Al Qaeda leaders had found "secure hideouts" where they were regrouping and leading new operations. Pakistan furiously rejected the complaint.

Pakistan troops killed in blast

At least three members of Pakistan's security forces have been killed in a roadside bombing in the tribal area of North Waziristan, the authorities say.
Military spokesman Shaukat Sultan said nine others were hurt, some critically, in the apparent suicide attack.

The bomb hit the army vehicle near the region's main town, Miran Shah.

Controversial peace deals have been reached with pro-Taleban militants in the area. Last week, the air force bombed a suspected militant camp.

White car

The military said the bomb went off at the Khajori checkpost on the outskirts of Miran Shah.

Pakistan says it has destroyed militant bases in South Waziristan

"The incident took place at around 1030 this morning," Maj Gen Sultan said.

"There was an administrative convoy on the Bannu-Miran Shah road. A white car came near it and exploded. As a result, three security officials were killed and nine injured.

"A few are critically injured. So far, in our opinion, it seems to be a suicide attack. We are getting more details."

No group has said it carried out the attack, which comes after local tribal leaders threatened revenge for the air raid on the alleged militant camp in South Waziristan last Tuesday.

More than 20 people were killed in the raid, officials say.

Local people told the journalists who visited the scene that eight people had been killed in the early morning raid and none of them were foreign nationals.

Tribal leaders in Waziristan said they want the peace deals with the authorities reconsidered.

Waziristan had seen a decline in conflict between pro-Taleban and government forces after the peace deals.
