ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will send a contingent of army personnel to Lebanon for the
exclusive purpose of de-mining of areas bombed by Israel during the 34-day conflict.

"The decision has been taken in view of the appeals made by our Lebanese friends and keeping in mind the continued threat of explosive devices faced by the people of Lebanon", Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz told a press conference here at the Prime Minister House on Saturday.

Aziz who became the first head of government to fly into Beirut after the ceasefire visited the areas in the capital worst hit by the Israeli bombing to witness firsthand the wide-scale devastation.

The Prime Minister said that the government’s decision is based on a consideration of solidarity with the people of Lebanon and "our commitment to help them recover from the devastation of recent conflict."

Prime Minister Aziz said, he talked to the Lebanese Prime Minister last night and informed him about the government's decision.

He said, the Lebanese Prime Minister was very much appreciative of President, Prime Minister and the government of Pakistan for this decision.

Prime Minister Aziz said, the number of army personnel (engineers) to be sent for de-mining is yet to be finalized. He, however, indicated that "it (the number of army personnel) would be in hundreds."

He further said that Pakistan's Envoy in New York has been asked to contact the UN office in this respect.

The Prime Minister referred to his recent visit to Lebanon and said the President, Speaker and the Prime Minister of Lebanon made a strong plea for Pakistan's
assistance, specially in the area of de-mining and humanitarian assistance.

He said, Pakistan has already sent four C-130planes of relief goods to Lebanon, while he has directed to send two more relief flights.
