ISLAMABAD - A top air force official informed the Abbottabad Commission that the country’s air bases were put on high alert as soon as the PAF received information about the US raid on the compound of Osama bin Laden.

The second meeting of the high powered commission, tasked with investigating the May 2 Abbottabad incursion by the US Navy Seals and reported killing of Osama bin Laden (OBL) by them, took place on Monday under the chairmanship of Supreme Court Judge, Justice Javed Iqbal, here in the Cabinet Division Block of Pakistan Secretariat. The other members of the commission, IG (r) Abbas Khan, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi and Lt Gen (r) Nadeem Ahmed, also attended the meeting. Major General Ashfaq Nadeem and deputy chief of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), Air Marshall Mohammed Hassan, appeared before the commission and gave briefings. Afterwards the two officials answered question of the commission members.

The commission discussed the deployment of the air force and army on the borders and the violation of Pakistani airspace by the US during the time of the operation.

Air Marshal Mohammad Hassan gave a detailed statement to the commission highlighting the events leading to Abbottabad Operation. He elaborated functioning of radar system, which forms the fundamental component of PAF’s air defence system. He also informed the commission about locations and altitude the PAF radars can cover, and their operation mechanism during war as well as peacetime.

He also indicated situations where the radar system cannot detect an intruding aircraft/helicopter due to terrain limitations. He stated that for the past many years and prior to May 2, PAF has maintained peacetime posture on its western borders.

He told the commission that on learning about the OBL operation, PAF immediately took adequate operational measures as per standard operating procedures (SOPs). PAF aircraft continued their presence in Abbottabad area till early morning.

Hi, this raid is the past and dwelling on it will change nothing. The PAF did not expect it. Moreover, it is a bigger disgrace that OBL was living large in Pakistan. It is one thing if he was hunted down in a cave, but living in luxury near the starship PA military academy? That is more embarassing.

The PAF has probably taken steps and moreover quietly inducting more sensors and radars to avoid this in the future. It should focus on inducting non-sanction prone planes and weapons platforms. The F-16s are useless in any scrap without the blessing of the US.

They may have been on high alert.. but the morale of a majority of pilots in those bases was rock bottom.
Even today.. knowing that they just sat there.. or rather their leadership had them sit there whilst the airspace they swore to defend with their lives was torn open.. hit em hard.

Useless to cry over split milk....

Y dont they think to counter that technology gap, which breach their security??

.
Is there also a commission to actually enquire and investigate in the fact that OBL was found so close to the academy in Pakistan. PAF defences can be spruced up with obtaining some money and spending it. But the bigger question is why and how OBL was there in Abbotabad!

.
These are fruits of the so called democracy,
AFAIK, the Air Chief ordered an interception, once the aircraft were airborne (confirmed by a PDF member, posting live from Abbotabad) the order was received from the PM House to pull back.......... not much you can do when hands are tied.

Incorrect title of thread,

btw, there is no criteria when this information received and when PAF bases put on high alert, suppose they put high alert when they received information that operation is going on but why within 20 min there were no counter action taken by PAF? Where we will take this useless doubtful high alert?

Strange statement by Air Marshal Mohammad Hassan,
He also indicated situations where the radar system cannot detect an intruding aircraft/helicopter due to terrain limitations.
it means some one worked and transfer radar coverage information. Even if PAF specialist are talking about terrain limitations and they aware from it not only by this operation then why they didn't try to overcome this limitation in past. He put more questions over efficiency of PAF with his strange statement.

What is minimum duration to bring fighter in air in case of emergency or high alert? i think it is not 20 min.

PAF quickly put bases on high alert
Faida?

Har Ghari Tayyaar Kamran hain hum Pass
Jese hon halaat shadmaan hain hum Fail

If they would've tried and failed all would be forgiven. They didn't try, so that really just pisses us off more that they were alerted but just sat there.

Moreover how it could be possible that Terbella air base Radar couldn't detect them? How it could be possible that high sensitive military installations, air bases, air defense systems were blind which situated within this TERRAIN.

Check these links, point rout between Jalaabad & Abbotabad and how many PAF bases situated near this rout and they all were slept at that moment but putting airbase on high alert. Pathetic.

.
1) If you know there are 5 F-18s waiting for you flying with an AWAC, what could you do? Those were detected.
2) After the detection, the ADA was alerted.
3) How can you expect the radars to pick a STEALTH chopper? Thats what STEALTH is.
4) If F-16s were sent to fight the F-18s, PAF was scared of any F-22 near Pakistan-Afghanistan border, which might lead to worse situation.

Before you critise someone or something, have total knowledge of what happened, and what would have happen if Step1 was taken and what the results would be if Step2 was taken. This has to be researched over in a limited time, hence taking the safe game.

The morale issue is what is the most important in the aftermath. Steps must be taken to improve this amongst the pilots, and the rest of the rank and file. These can include a full explanation by classified briefing to take them into confidence, with an aim to rectifying the deficiencies as they are identified.

AA: Do you realize what "tried and failed" would have entailed? The entire PAF would have been eviscerated in a matter of minutes if any air hostilities were initiated. I think it was ultimately better that the PAF remained oblivious of the OBL until it was too late. It is better to live to fight another day.

I don't think so, 4 helicopters can be taken out. US would have to escalate the issue into a full scale war to take out PAF, massive war would ensue. Poora mulk khara hota behind our uniformed men.

And still, that is also acceptable. Agar defend nahi karna toh apni dukaan bandh kardoh.

suppose i am sleeping and person enters my house at night steals my car....yea i do have an explanation that sir i was sleeping so the guy came and stole my car and its logical afterall i am a human who sleeps at night:lol:....but when later on someone tells me that the guy who stole your car is your business partner and he gives me rock solid proof......now after knowing all this if i still continue my business ties with him and dont take action against him like burning down his house setting his factory on fire then there is something seriously wrong with me...either the car that got stolen was bought from haram ka maal or my conscience is dead or i have gone astray:undecided:

There was full planning to take out the entire first-line PAF, with multiple resources in the air ready to do so during the OBL raid.

However, I respect your opinion that such destruction would have been acceptable, but I disagree with it.

in an event of full scale war all the american soldiers would have been vapourized in Afghanistan
..we are 180 million and growing:lol: no worries ....we could hit all the american bases within 4500 kilometer radius although the radius is much more....israel could have been annahilated.......such arguments that oh america would have done this and that are usually given by secular fascists who receive payments from Captain america to demoralize nation.
Dident Hazrat Hussain radi Allah took stand.....so did Khalid bin Waleed radi Allah against the largest Byzantine army scoring the most decisive victory in the history of warfare....so did Tipu Sultan..againt entire British Freemasonic Empire where sun never used to set:agree:
