FATF grey list was a hanging sword over Pakistan's economic emancipation and an impediment to foreign investment in Pakistan. That grey list turning to blacklist would have brought in Iran like sanctions on Pakistan. It's imposition on Pakistan was a political ploy to force Pakistan to toe the US line. But it seems like that "the imposition" is about to be eased of. Means Pakistan has negotiated well with the US (at Davos). Some real headway is expected in Afghanistan peace process too. Things may change for the better in the upcoming months. It would herald a mood change towards Pakistan.

There seems to be a debate going on whether the US did supply PAF with DRFM technology, some people insisting that forget the older F-16s which have gone through MLU, even the Block-52s were supplied without this cutting edge technology. However, it seems that the PAF has possessed this capability for almost a decade and found this article supporting the subject.

ITT Exelis to supply additional ALQ-211(V)9 pods to Pakistan

AIDEWS pod-mounted system ITT Exelis has received a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract from the US Robins Air Force Base for the supply of additional pod-mounted ALQ-211(V)9 Advanced Integrated Defensive Electronic Warfare System (AIDEWS) to the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). The jamming pods, delivered under the $54m FMS contract, will be integrated into PAF’s fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets. Exelis Integrated Electronic Warfare Systems business vice-president and general manager Rich Sorelle said the pod-mounted system brings electronic warfare technology to its customers at much lesser cost. "Since AIDEWS is being adopted by many of our international allies and is based on our modular and scalable EW technology, future upgrade costs are shared and affordable," Sorelle added. Developed from the ALQ-211 (V) 4 system, AIDEWS provides pilots with situational awareness and protection against radar-based threats, including modern surface-to-air and air-to-air weapon systems. The (V)9 pod provides digital radar warning, high-power jamming, threat geolocation and situational awareness using line replaceable units (LRUs) interchangeable with internal AIDEWS systems. The system has been integrated into a wide variety of US and allied defence rotary-wing and fighter aircraft including the NH-90 helicopter, V-22 Osprey, MH-47, MH-60 Black Hawk, F-16 Fighter and several commercial platforms. Work under the contract will be performed at the company’s Electronic Systems division in Clifton, New Jersey, US. The company was also awarded a $49.09m FMS contract for supply of systems software and support equipment for the ALQ-211(V)9 pods in July 2011. The package included delivery of 18 pods, four pod shells, two antenna coupler sets, as well as two lab test benches and data systems.
The AN/ALQ-211(v4) is a highly capable and integrated ECM that uses digital radio frequency memory (DRFM) technology to record and re-transmit the frequencies emitted by enemy radars. Not only can this jam and spoof an enemy aircraft’s sensor unit, but it can also heavily mitigate the effectiveness of a beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM). Like the JHMCS, the AN/ALQ-211 is an industry-leading product.

That’s one perspective which i myself can agree with.

However, such a scenario involves many hurdles on CPEC by US. Well, let’s see how your hypothesis works with Sir @Khafee ’s thoughts about vipers coming in march if we get back to white list this month inshaAllah.

Well if what you're saying is true, our status won't be changing right now. We're not getting into the blacklist, but we most certainly not getting out of the 'grey' either.

If FATF goes away ... then it could be a good indication that some 18 to 24 F-16 Block-70/72 based on CSF release may take place.
If US offer F35s that would be nice Poland buying 32 F35 worth 4 billion includes logistics and training along rest fleet V upgrade yes grab more used F-16s with AESA upgrades would be great combo.

Pakistan needs to make an EW Version of the JF-17, and have it carry pods and fuel tanks to get around the expected limitations of our current F-16 Fleet and any future F-16s to be acquired. Alternatively, in order to keep up with the F-16s in terms of range, this would be where getting at least 18 J-10C (to be made into EW Platforms) would be the best option, rather than burden down the JF-17 and expect it to also carry fuel tanks. It would send a signal that Pakistan will look else where if need be, so don't think you can keep dragging out sales to Pakistan.

As far as actually having the DRFM: ACM Tanvir is the man to ask.

DRFM is a thing of a past which specialized in RF threats.


The AIDEWS incorporates DRFM along with SIRFC (Suite Of Integrated Radio Frequency Countermeasures). The version PAF F-16s fly with has both the units fused in one.

DRFM is excellent to evade an R77, but what it wouldn't do well in case of an R73. To tackle this challenge, AIDEWS was developed to counter infrared-guided missiles which are practically becoming BVR in terms of range.

The US DoD specifically directed developers to increase the range of AIM-9X Block III because of the proliferation of DRFM systems. But then systems like AIDEWS were invented.
