What's new

PAF conducted 5,500 bombing runs in FATA since 2008.

Taimi

This is the unfortunate disconnect that we have amongst the forces,
This imagery is available at least with two organizations that I know of.

Secondly the Air chief made a huge mistake saying what he did, Google's imagery is at least X days old, in case of Pakistan
the Imagery is not updated very frequently.
Thus to plan any operation you need live and accurate imagery on which planners would make decisions.

y do u think everybody uses free version of google earth like urself???
have u ever seen the actual mission??how it is planned n executed??army gives the target to air force after getting the targets confirmed through ground forces.air crafts fly over the target many times in order to confirm it fully and they take thier time as they have no fear of getting hit by any SAM or AA guns.then they engage their targets n targets r continuously observed by the ground observers.so in doing so if u can use google earth so wats wrong in it.it will be an additional help.this is not the first time that paf has publicly announced that initially they used google earth b4 getting DB 110 pods for recce.

.
Are you sure ?? Do you have any idea what plus points the Google earth provides which may be other satellites don't provide. Google gives you 2D / 3D pictures of whatever you want, it provides you position of sun light at different times of the day. Google earth has lot of potential which other military satellites can't give. Military satellites give pictures from one angle mostly, Google provides 3D shots thus planning operations becomes very easy, it gives pilot the exact layout they want to see, one of the major reason why there has been lot of old fashion bombing runs, as many times the militants had locations up on the mountains or at isolated places, thus non-precision bombing runs were conducted.

HEIGHT of ignorance. u can never use Google earth to plan ur missions. u r basically giving a lot of power to google to manipulate you and hence get indirectly controlled by USA government..

The bottom line as I see it is not divulge tactical information on ongoing operations/war ---- period. The Air Chief was not trying to boost the image of PAF but to boost his own. He amde a grave eror here that is why the C130 bit was not reported in local press, even Dawn did not carry this detail.

Never volunteer any info. the enemy -- even when you know that they might know about it!!!

i dont think that it is going to effect much.to launch a terrorist strike on an air base inorder to damage that rec C-130 terrorrist must have an inside man on that base.n if they have any real inside man on that base he must have delivered that info to the terrorist long ago.after the mehran base incident the security is very high around the air bases n even the army units r being deployed for the security of the air bases.

I think what PAF chief said was that they HAD TO use google earth. It was not by choice but by compulsion as Pakistan don't have any other mean in space to keep an eye in that unreachable terrain. And i agree that it is a very dangerous track where PAF and PA would have to take extreme caution as we know what Google is actually.

.
^^ he said as reported that we broke the back of militants, and also said the rate of success through air strikes was 15 %. :undecided:

Please don't twist the statement of air chief. He said that military operations over all contributed to 10-15% in normalization of situation in insurgency hit area and he is right. Insurgencies are political despites in nature and unless political forces take responsiblity of civilian administration this menace would remain there.

.
Well than if you use those harsh standards, PA and PAF have also been defeated as they dare not enter NW till date?

Ok let's talk about motives first.... Why you think that PA need to wage a war against groups which have signed peace deal with same army? Next, how you think that PA is not there in NA? sir, there are 5 brigades already deployed in NWA.

Sir,

This usage was termed ' as in the past '----sometimes simple things can help in big ventures---. Google earth is just another tool in the belt----. And no---u s won't be manipulating the site---because if it became evident that it did---the backlash by the u s public would be terrible on the govt----pak would claim that u s is undermining their efforts against the wot----and any manipulation of google earth would be proof---so it won't happen.

Google earth has been used quite often by different countries in different ventures.

AIR WEAPONS: The Pods And Smart Bombs Of Pakistan

November 23, 2011: One of the largest air campaigns waged in the last decade has gotten little publicity. The Pakistan Air Force has flown over 5,500 combat sorties over the tribal territories (mainly Waziristan and points north) in the last three years. This was all in support of a major offensive against the Pakistani Taliban, which had organized a tribal rebellion against Pakistan, and was carrying out terror attacks throughout the country as well. Eventually, over 100,000 ground troops were involved, and they depended on the air force for reconnaissance of the thinly populated tribal areas, as well as prompt and accurate bombing support.

For the first year of this campaign, Pakistan admitted that it was often relying on Google Earth for attack planning. Then the air force obtained ten DB-110 reconnaissance pods. These devices, which looked like a large, streamlines bomb, use digital cameras. These are superior to film cameras because no film development is required, and digital images are more easily analyzed using software, rather than depending mostly on human photo interpreters. The infrared sensor records everything in the aircraft's flight path, horizon-to-horizon. The pod records many gigabytes of data to onboard storage devices, and can also transmit less detailed data immediately to a ground station. In the last two years, F-16s carrying DB-110 pods have flown over 500 missions, and been very successful in spotting Taliban camps and units of Taliban themselves.

Some 11,000 bombs were dropped on these targets. Since 80 percent of these were smart bombs, nearly 5,000 targets were destroyed. DB-110 equipped F-16s were often used to check to see what damage was done by these bomb attacks. A C-130 was also equipped with a reconnaissance sensor (a day/night vidcam) that was able to track Taliban ground day and night, and made it possible for the army to crush the Taliban in most of the tribal territories.

Pakistan also received eighteen Sniper XR targeting pods in 2008. These pods are all the rage with fighter pilots. The latest generation of these pods contain FLIR (video quality night vision infrared radar) and high resolution TV cameras that enable pilots flying at 6,300 meters (20,000 feet) to clearly make out what is going on down there. The pods also contain laser designators for laser guided bombs, and laser range finders that enable pilots to get coordinates for JDAM (GPS guided) bombs. Safely outside the range of most anti-aircraft fire (five kilometers up, and up to fifty kilometers away), pilots can literally see the progress of ground fighting, and have even been acting as aerial observers for ground forces. These new capabilities also enable pilots to more easily find targets themselves, and hit them with highly accurate laser guided or JDAM bombs. While bombers still get target information from ground controllers for close (to friendly troops) air support, they can now go searching on their own, in areas where there are no friendly ground troops.

Impressive capabilities PAF has acquired with DB110 and Sniper XR pods. is there any comparable product in PAF inventory acquired from China?

.
what a shame bombing our own ppl and we should be proud of that ?

I hope other IK supporters are not like you, because that would be very dangerous for Pakistan if he gets elected. The terrorists in the FATA have made the tribal people hostage, the Pakistan military is fully backed by the tribal people in their fight against the terrorists. The tribals have formed their own lashkars to fight alongside the Pakistan Army. They have achieved extraordinary success against the terrorists.
