ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that it needs to build more nuclear power plants to overcome a severe energy shortfall and support its socio-economic development.

Addressing IAEA’s annual general conference in Vienna on Wednesday, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission’s Chairman Dr Ansar Parvez said the IAEA should take larger initiatives to facilitate construction of nuclear power plants in member states on a non-discriminatory basis to contribute to their social and economic development.

He said the Chashma-I and Karachi nuclear power projects were operational, while Chashma-II would be commissioned next year.

He said Pakistan had to its credit more than 45 years of safe reactor operation experience and a technical and engineering infrastructure to maintain and provide technical support to the plants.

Dr Parvez said the government wanted the PAEC to install 8,800MW of nuclear power capacity by 2030.

He said the country had set up a strong and independent safety and security infrastructure, including an independent Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority, and was party to several international conventions.

Pakistan should promote its private sector more extensively. It will not only provide more jobs and faster implementation of projects with transparency. But also become a export oriented industry. Like in India our private sector companies are doing that and installing about 60,000 MW by 2015.

right now we can cover our demands with 8,800MW but by 2030. Who knows how big our population will be.

This is a good goal set by PAEC but at the same time we need to set goals for wind, solar and hydro energy too. Now is the time to look for reduction in thermal energy percentage.

The current deficit is on the order of 5000MW and PAEC wants to install 8,800MW but by 2030 -- can you see what's so very wrong with this? pakistan will be in continuous deficit with regard to energy production - unless, it revises it's entire outlook for energy production -- Why not free, privatize the market? After all energy is not a right, or a government service, so why not let people who want energy to buy as much or as little as they want?

So very true.. Let the market decide what energy is worth. I can tell you first hand on how things in Delhi have improved since they privatized the distribution. Just privatizing the distribution process has reduced the average loadshedding in South Delhi from a figure of 3hours every day in summers 4 years back to under 20 minutes a day in 2010

You still have corruption, but the lethargy and indifferent service attitude is gone. During a power failure I can actually get thru to a complaint center, get a complaint number and often get a call back to confirm when the power is restored..

Costs have certainly gone up, but now its upto the citizens to buy as much as they want or not if they want to save money

8,800 is just nuclear energy, which is a huge increase from the 600 mw nuclear we're producing right now. Whether or not this will get done is another question. But assuming it does, it will definitely be only a fraction of the energy added.

Why not open the civilian energy sector wide open - let Chinese companies with 1000 Mw reactors and Russian and French, I don't think US or UK should be considered, these are unreasonable people and unreasonable businesspersons and really they don't need our business - OK, so we have Chinese, Russian and French if they want to be a part of this and they build, they operate, they sell - why not?

^^ I think we are already on the way by dissolution of pepco and its replacement with 8 private companies (among them one is owned by Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and one by Zardari himself).

8,800MW only from Nuclear power means the overall target for energy sector is way higher, also there are many small dam projects on the way!!

Brother Turkye has made an agreement with the Russian for build and operate Nuclear power generations

Nuclear power is expensive option and also not environment friendly , we should focus on Hydel Power Generation ,Solar and Wind Power.

Because they are cheaper?

Cheap being one factor, it will give diversification. With inhouse production of such products, we can give boost to the local industry and then we have the export prospects also.

Use the electricity generation tools, where they are more feasible.

Like on the shore lines from Karachi towards Thatta side, wind power can be the most beneficial one and can give non-stop power generation through out the year.

Solar power, would work in the desert areas or where we have good head round the year.

Coal being one of the other source for generation.

Nuclear and Hydel other options.

We should go with all the feasible techs and the most efficient and effective ones.

And yeah, by building one good nuke plant at Karachi of some 1000MW, we should look for atleast 2 sea water desalinization plants, one in Sindh and another near Gwadar and opt for inland pipelines, which can be used not only for drinking water but also for irrigation. With a good, efficient network we can make more land fertile, plus, may be with such step, the Kalabagh dam can become a reality as this desalinized water can be used for irrigation in sindh.

We have just 25% of Pakistan's land cultivated, huge potential there if we can have more water, especially Baluchistan.
