Overpopulated India Has A Soldier Shortage

March 31, 2010: India and the United States, both have volunteer armed forces of about the same size. But India, with more than three times the population, has a hard time attracting sufficient new recruits. The U.S. has more recruits than it needs, while India has shortages. The reasons are partly economic, and partly due to a high number of illiterates (about 39 percent of the population) in India. In the United States, the military pay is competitive with the civilian economy. In India it is not, at least for the kind of people (literate and healthy) the military is looking for. In the last two decades, the Indian economy has been booming, and the kind of people the army used to go after, are taking better paying, and less arduous, jobs in the civilian sector.
While the army has a hard time, for the more technical air force and navy, the situation is much worse. These services insist on recruits having the equivalent of the American high school education (much less common in India), with heavy emphasis on science, including familiarity with computers. The screening process takes two or three days, which consists of written and physical exams. If you make it, the initial enlistment is for ten years. The basic training is rough, and not everyone makes it.

The shortages are worse for officers, with India only able to obtain about 80 percent of needs. The reason is the same as for the enlisted troops; better civilian career opportunities. But the Indians have wisely maintained their high entrance standards, and have been increasing the defense budget enough to make officer pay more competitive. This problem will not go away, and as the civilian economy grows, the number of people willing to volunteer for military service will continue to decline unless the pay and benefits get competitive.

Attrition: Overpopulated India Has A Soldier Shortage

.
The fact is that the selection process is very strict.
The armed forces are considered to be one of the best jobs in india.

.
welll there is one method

in future lot of countries are going to be dependent on force multipliers(technology)

. .
i am surprised at this, i assumed that india would be like china in this regard, in china they have way more volunteers than thy need. and i don't think its because the requirements are stricter in india than anywhere else in fact the opposite should be true, if one has more people than they need then they can afford to choose from the masses if one need people they they will loosen the requirements

. .
This is nothing new or controversial, as the opportunities in the private structure grow, armed forces always face shortage. This has been experienced in the United States or Canada also. As India’s economy grows and opportunities are abundant, youngsters would want to go for private sector jobs more. This will have 2 effect

1. It will force the armed forces to rely more on technology rather than manpower

2. It will also force the armed forces to increase their pay packages as well as benefits to attract more people. This will in turn lead to a much better outlook for the armed forces.
This is actually not a bad thing and such spikes are only temporary. India has a big enough population to keep the armed forces well satisfied.

.
Armed forces number has nothing to do with population. The selection process is so damn tough.

Lacs of candidates apply each year. Only 50-75 applicants for officers are selected in each batch for each scheme. There are about 4 schemes. So no more than 300 officers can pass out each year.

The procedure is very strict. The standards are up there with the best in the world. Thats the reason for shortage.

+10

Stop posting garbage from strategypage. India does not force her people to join armed forces. We have enough soldier to protect our country. Most of the martial races belongs to India and Indians are famous for their bravery. We either won or died never surrendered to anyone.

How many people can India hold?

Their are over 1 billion people, they need to implement some sort of plan like China to control birth rates otherwise their are going to be alot of Indian Muhajirs in Pakistan and we definitely do not want this. :disagree:

no kidding and 1/6 of it is in India. By 2050 its going to be over 2 billion. India won't be able to sustain itself.

So what do you suggest ? We stop people from reproducing?
Anyway , if you really think the world's too populated , then there's a link for people like you.
