Over 12,000 Farmers Committed Suicide in 3 Years, Says Maharashtra Govt

The Indian government has long ignored agriculture, with such consequences.

If the Indian government had tried its best to modernize agriculture, perhaps there won't be so many farmers committed suicide.

I hope the China Agricultural Association can provide some assistance projects to Indian farmers, just like in Africa.

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's agricultural foreign assistance projects have resulted in increased food production and income for smallholder farmers in Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique, according to a case study revealed on Monday.

In its first visit to the UN New York headquarters, the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) joined the Chinese Permanent Mission to the UN and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to display the results of China's partnership with Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique on agricultural development.

The two programs with both African countries linked local farmers and officials with Chinese knowledge, technology, and market-inclusive systems to boost food production, said the study.

The study assessed the two partnerships, the Agricultural Technical Cooperation Project in Guinea-Bissau and the Agricultural Technology Demonstration Center in Mozambique, as examples of what South-South collaboration can achieve.

"UNDP welcomes these joint assessments, which illustrate China's commitment to partnerships that support the achievement of national development goals and the aspirations of Africa's Agenda 2063 and 2030 Agenda," said Ahunna Eziakonwa, UNDP assistant administrator and regional director for Africa.

"We welcome the technology, expertise and financial investments of China as we work together to advance our national development plans," said Ambassador Antonio Gumende, permanent representative of the Mission of the Republic of Mozambique to the United Nations.

Speaking at the event, Deng Boqing, vice chairperson of CIDCA, said that promoting agricultural and rural development and poverty eradication in developing countries, especially in Africa, has always been a priority of China's foreign aid.

As for the Indian government itself, in addition to increasing funding for agriculture-related research, it also has to provide some assistance to farmers.

Agriculture can't contribute much to GDP, but many people do it for living. If India government still ignores it, farmers, who make up half of India's population, will live in pain for long time, and there is no hope of getting rid of it.

Numbers are staggering but one has to remember , Maharastra is the state that accounts for more than 50% farmer suicides in India .
Also what is seen some cases where old or terminally ill people commit suicide and they were shown as farmer deaths so that his family gets govt compensation on compassionate ground .

Although the Indian government is reluctant to admit it, "livelihood difficulties" are indeed the main cause of farmers' suicides.
Once the grain harvest fails, and the resulting debt burden is the main cause of Indian farmers' suicides.
Among the causes of poor grain harvest, floods and droughts caused by abnormal monsoons are the most important factors.

According to the Times of India, 45% to 70% of India's agricultural land depends to varying degrees on Indian Ocean monsoon precipitation to maintain production.
In other words, Indian agriculture has not yet got rid of the primitive state of relying on weather for a living. In other countries where agriculture sector has been modernized, the impact of weather on agriculture will not be as severe as in India.

If the Indian government was willing to invest money in building a large number of irrigation networks, ponds & reservoirs, promoting agricultural machinery, improved seeds(mainly hybrid rice and wheat), efficient insecticide, fertilizers and advanced horticulture, etc., the living conditions of Indian farmers should have been greatly improved.

Mumbai: More than 12,000 farmers have committed suicide in Maharashtra between 2015 and 2018, the Legislative Assembly was informed on Friday.

Out of the total 12,021 farmer suicides during the three-year period, 6,888 cases were found to be eligible for government aid after scrutiny by district-level committees, Relief and

Rehabilitation Minister Subhash Deshmukh told the House in a written reply.

So far, family members of 6,845 farmers have been given financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh each, he said.

Between January and March 2019, 610 farmers have committed suicide out of which 192 cases were eligible for financial assistance, the minister said.

Of the 192 eligible cases, financial compensation has been given to the kin of 182 farmers, Deshmukh said.
