PESHAWAR/MARDAN: The tripartite alliance of opposition parties has rejected the government’s offer to hold all parties conference over the widespread rigging allegations in the May 30 local body elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and insisted that it would go ahead with its shutter down strike plan from Wednesday till the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led government in the province stepped down.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the alliance at the Bacha Khan Markaz here on Monday, its president Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that the government’s APC was aimed to sabotage the agitation call given by the opposition parties against rigging in the local government polls in the province. He said they would continue their protest till the resignation of the provincial government and re-election in the province.
The government has convened the APC for fear of the opposition’s call for agitation, he said, adding that a committee had been formed to win over the support of traders for the shutter down. There will be complete strike throughout the province, he added.
The meeting was attended by leaders of the Pakistan people’s Party and JUI-F.
Says it will go ahead with strike from Wednesday
Mian Iftikhar alleged that the government had distributed Zakat funds to secure votes in the local body polls. Despite end of polling at 5pm, people continued to cast votes till 12 midnight on the constituency from where brother of Chief Minister Pervez Khattak contested in Nowshera, he claimed.
The ANP central secretary general said that committees had also been constituted to facilitate the people and safeguard them against problems due to the strike. He claimed that on one hand ballot boxes were stolen and snatched from polling staff by PTI workers, and on the other the government was forcing the independents to support it in formation of governments at district level.
Mian Iftikhar said that the alliance was also in contact with other political parties to get their support and pave way for resignation of the government. He said that provincial government’s inability to govern was reflected on the fact that over 50 per cent of development budget remained unspent for the second consecutive year. He also criticised the government for lodging fake FIR in a murder case and said that the government forced the father of slain boy to nominate him (Iftikhar) in the case.
In Mardan, while addressing a party function at his residence on Monday, ANP provincial president Ameer Haider Khan Hoti termed the PTI-led government’s call for all parties conference as a well-planned conspiracy to sabotage the tripartite alliance’s protest movement against rigging in the recently held local government polls across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Newly elected tehsil member from Baghicha Dhairy union council Nasrullah Khan announced to join the ANP on the occasion.
The former chief minister said the PTI chief Imran Khan’s offer for re-election in the whole province was like shedding crocodile tears. Instead, Mr Hoti asked the PTI-led provincial government to step down over its failure to hold free, fair and transparent local government elections.
He recalled that Imran Khan had been demanding ouster of the central government over rigging allegations in the last general elections despite the fact that those elections were held under the supervision of an acting government. He said the recent LG polls were directly held under the supervision of PTI government, thus the polls were ‘massively rigged’.
Mr Hoti claimed that leaders of the tripartite alliance would raise their voice against the irregularities at the LG elections at every forum. He said they also were in contact with leadership of other opposition parties to join their protest.
Mr Hoti said the provincial rulers had lost their right to remain in power any more as they had badly failed to protect lives of innocent citizens during the elections because many persons were killed in the election-related clashes owing to poor law and order situation in parts of the province.
He demanded of the provincial government to resign and hold re-election for general and local government systems under the supervision of the acting government.
