An opinion poll has found the ruling Awami League is gaining the trust of the people in Bangladesh with most participants saying the country is heading in the right direction. However, they also marked corruption as the biggest obstacle to development and most disapproved of the actions of police, parliament, and the opposition. The findings of the survey with a sample size of 2,500, conducted by Nielson-Bangladesh for the US-based research organisation, International Republican Institute (IRI) in May and June this year, was published on Wednesday.

The results show, in the one-and-a-half year after assuming office for a second consecutive spell, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government has 66 percent support, while her party, the ruling Awami League, has garnered one percent more. Despite shortcomings, people were feeling increasingly optimistic about the country’s prospects, with 62 percent of the respondents believing it was on the right track. That is a six percent rise from the results of a similar survey in 2014.

A total of 60 percent said they liked the Awami League. A similar share said they did not support the Jamaat-e-Islami and Jatiya Party. BNP is liked by 40 percent, while 46 percent said they disliked the party.

The respondents also justified their increased support for the Awami League, based on factors they look for in a political party such as strength of leadership, young leaders, support for women, etc.

Greater confidence on the Awami League seen among the participants because, they said, of the work done for education, infrastructural development, health, and national security.

However, most identified corruption as the main obstacle to development along with factors like political instability and law and order. Most of the respondents, 68 percent, said they were satisfied with the state of law and order, while 64 percent felt the political situation was stable.

The public support for a caretaker government to hold elections appeared to have weakened, according to the survey findings. In 2014, 77 percent wanted national polls under such an arrangement, while 18 percent had opposed the notion. But the findings of 2015 show a 10 percent fall in support, while opposition to it has climbed to 22 percent.

Along with the fall in support for holding polls under a non-elected government, the survey also found that the respondents were keen to see the present government complete its term.

Sure we want the government to complete it's term. It's doing wonderful by raising GDP thanks to higher inflation rate. When global prices of oil and other petroleum products are decreasing, the government made sure that it increases in Bangladesh. Recently there has been an increase in gas prices by 27% and electricity by 3%. Also, the only work they did in education is increase tax rates and introduce newer ones.

Also, I can make a poll of my own, choose 2,500 people for my liking (for favourable statistics) and ask them questions

76% positive view for RAB and 59% for an Election Commission that hasn't even held one, gives it away.

Real GDP (i.e when subtracting inflation) is still growing healthy rate in Bangladesh at around 6 percent...expected to increase to 7 percent long term.

Bangladesh doesn't use real GDP. Our inflation rate is 9-10%, whereas nominal GDP growth rate is 6-6.3%.

@Nilgiri Also, we are the 12th most corrupt nation in the World (from 14th a year ago). Most below us are either in internal conflict or international sanctions. Also, any media that posts anti-government stuff or questions its credibility, gets shut down and it's journalists get jailed.

Ofcourse they are..BNP is run by idiotic clueless reactionary old sacks of potato....the world has changed and so has the political playing field....BNP has absolutely no idea about what it is doing or going to do in the near or distant future...AL has created a strong footing here and aint gonna move anytime soon!

After the Mughals of Bangla lost to the British. The British slowly taken away the power from Muslims of Bengals and raised a slave class Hindu generation in Kolakata. Whom were best at sucking diks of British. Though it could be easily found out that Hindu Bengalis were found in the ranks of Mughals and Siraj ud daula. But during British rule for 100 years Muslim Bengalis were sidelined.

Muslims of Bengal did all to get back their power starting from 20th century. And joined East Pakistan losing many of its ancestral places. So we thought Muslims of Pakistan will equally rule the country together, But those people at night attacked unarmed Bengalis, so Bengalis got fed up and took arms at hand to separate themselves from the hell land. Which led BD at a range of Indian hegemony. That time AL was the only political power. They never directly said for secession. Because majority people never separate, its always the minority.

Though without any formal announcement by SM, these bengalis fought a war. SM did all to protect new born BD by aligning with left forces of world where India was natural ally. Which irked CIA and ISI. Bhutto had enmity with SM. ISI sponsored agents after destabilizing BD killed SM. And those agent circle then chose Zia as the president. And sidelined all AL minded people from the country and raised a new slave class. Ultimate goal was to reintegrate BD with Pakistan not as equal one but as a slave and launching pad to attack India.

But Zia was too patriot, and not followed all their commands. Which led the assassination of Zia. Among this slave generation the top class looted BD and settled in western countries. But they also raised a patriot middle class who has no idea of anything. What they are taught is kill AL, Kill Hindu and hate India.

So 75-96, 2001-2006, BD remained as Bangistan. Many of them are plain Bangladeshi but played by the Bangistanis. But Bangladeshi forces slowly again from 90 started to take back the power. Which led BD to this day.
