3 terrorists belong to TTP arrested from Lahore

LAHORE: On the basis of intelligence report, the sleuths of intelligence agencies on Friday arrested three terrorists from Minar-e-Pakistan.

According to a Private TV Channel, the arrests were made after interrogation by intelligence agencies from some other arrested terrorists.

The arrested terrorists belong to Tehreek-e-Taliban Punjab. Mir Fazalullah, Haya Gul and Qari Sufian are among the arrested terrorists.

The arrested terrorists have been shifted to undisclosed location where interrogators are investigating him.

It may be recalled the intelligence agencies in their report to Punjab home ministry and Federal Interior Ministry had said that the after operation Rah-e-Rast in Swat, Dir and Buner escaped to different areas of the country especially in Lahore and Karachi.

The notion propounded by some political parties and many individuals who should know better that ordinary people in Malakand and FATA back the Taliban as some kind of stand against the US was delivered a resounding blow in Swat, where the joint ANP-PPP candidate won by a big margin a provincial seat that lay vacant following the assassination of its MPA. He too had been affiliated with the ANP. Whereas this factor played a part in the victory for his brother, it is no coincidence that candidates of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf and the Jamaat-e-Islami finished last in the race, collecting only a few thousand votes each. Of course the ANP had also swept the general election in Swat in 2008; many of its candidates at the time spoke out bravely against the Taliban.

The continued successes notched up by the ANP – which come despite its rather poor effort to offer up good governance – demonstrate how desperate people are to escape the Taliban. It is sad that so often there is an insistence that these people in fact back extremists. The perception has been created by the state's long failure to stand up to the Taliban. From Waziristan, the intellectuals, the writers and the journalists of that agency who opposed the Taliban were forced out. This drive against those who opposed them was conducted by the Taliban in other places too. The ouster of such persons meant that those left behind were too frightened to speak out and an impression of support for the militants was created by the silence that then prevailed. It is important to challenge this myth. In Swat, hoteliers and others who made a living from tourism are desperately trying to revive it. Some people have been persuaded to venture back; the people of Swat hope that others will follow. Those who have lived under the Taliban know there is nothing remotely romantic about their worldview. In recent days the media has been conveying the voices of these people to others everywhere. This effort needs to be stepped up and it must be made clear that in Swat and other places people want, more than anything else, an escape from the militancy that has endangered their lives and welfare for years

Seven suspects arrested in operation Rah-e-Rast

ISLAMABAD, Jan 30 (APP): During the last 24 hours, security forces conducted search and clearance operation at Sar Cheema (Asharai), Asharbanr, Allahabad, Dakorak near Charbagh, Manglour, Sar Qala, Kotah and Nawan Killi and apprehended seven suspects and recovered cache of arms and ammunition in operation Rah-e-Rast in Malakand Division.

PESHAWAR, Jan 31 (APP): In operation Rah-e-Rast in Swat-Malakand, security forces conducted search and clearance operation at Bodigram near Matta, Khawazakhela, Nawan Killi near Mingora, Topai near Kabbal and Pabbi near Noshera and apprehended 10 suspects.

The explosion occurred near a girls’ school in Lower Dir’s Timergarah, sources told DawnNews.

Three USAID officials killed in Lower Dir blast

PESHAWAR: Three American aid officials were among six killed that included three school children when a paramilitary convoy on its way to inaugurate a school was hit by a roadside bombing in the northern Lower Dir district on Wednesday, officials said.

A security official said the three aid workers belonged to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Their names could not immediately be ascertained.

The official said a convoy escorted by the paramilitary Frontier Corps was hit by a powerful roadside bombing near the Koto village in Hajiabad in Lower Dir, killing the three aid workers and three school children.

“We can not release the identities of the aid workers”, the official said, requesting he not be named.

“It was a huge blast”, local journalist, Haroon Rashid, who accompanied the convoy and was also wounded in the explosion told Dawn.

“The army has sealed off the area and no one is being allowed to move. I am here with wounds on my leg and arms and am waiting to be evacuated”, he said on phone from the scene of the occurrence.

The explosion left 59 others wounded including five paramilitary personnel and two local journalists. Majority of those wounded were girls from a girls’ high school situated on the main road, Deputy Coordination Officer, Lower Dir, Ghulam Muhammad told Dawn from the regional headquarters of Timergarah.

The security official said the group was on its way to inaugurate a primary school in Kad, Lower Dir that had been blown up by militants but was rebuilt by USAID.

The security forces immediately sealed off the area and began evacuating the dead and wounded.

“We are still receiving the wounded”, Medical Superintendent of the District headquarters Hospital, Lower Dir, Dr. Wakil Muhammad said.

Pakistan highly appreciates generous donation of Oman for IDPs

JALOZAI (NOWSHERA), Febr 4 (APP): Pakistan highly appreciates cordial cooperation and generous donations extended by Government of Oman for relief and rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) living in camps due to ongoing military operation against terrorists in their respective areas. This was said by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Syed Samsam Ali Bukhari while talking to media persons after inspecting distribution of goods donated by government of Oman here at Jalozai camp on Thursday.

Ambassador of Oman to Pakistan, Muhammad Saeed Al-Lawati, head of Omani delegation, Muhammad Al-Wahabi and representatives of Special Support Group (SSP) of Pak Army were also present on the occasion.

State Minister said Pakistan is thankful to all those countries which have extended their help and support for the dislocated people, but the contribution of Oman is matchless.

He thanked government of Oman and all those charity organizations in the country which sent goods including eatable items for the IDPs in Pakistan.

He said people of Oman have proved that they are really concerned over the difficulties and hardships faced by people of Pakistan due to dislocation from their native area because of military operation.

Such act of cooperation and kindness will strengthen brotherly relations between the people of Pakistan and Oman, observed Samsam Ali Bukhari.

He said presently around 18629 families, about 196352 individuals, a put up at Jalozai camp and the whole population will benefit from the donation made by government of Oman.

The goods distributed by Oman are enough for fulfilling the food requirements of IDPs of the camp for one month, he informed.

About the facilities provided to the IDPs, the Minister said government is providing food, electricity, medical and educational facilities to them at the camp. Speaking briefly, Oman Ambassador informed newsmen that government of Oman has pledged to provide donation up to dollar 10 million for the IDPs.

Today’s consignment, he added, is the second one and around 37 trucks of goods are distributed among the inmates of the camp.
Government of Oman will soon send third consignment of goods including eatable items to blankets for the IDPs residing in Jalozai Camp, he added.

Earlier, Minister of State and Information, Syed Samsam Ali Bukhari and Omani delegation members visited hospital and school imparting skill training to the IDPs at the camp.

PESHAWAR: Police arrested seven militants, including an important militant commander, during raids in Nowshera, DawnNews reported.

The key militant commander known as Tahir, alias Ibne Qasim, was arrested from Hakeemabad.

One of the arrested men was identified as Maulana Rashid Ahmed of Swat for his alleged links to the Taliban. — DawnNews

James Jones pledges long-term ties with Pakistan, commends Swat success

WASHINGTON, Feb 13 (APP): U.S. National Security Adviser James Jones assured Pakistan of long-term ties in meetings with the country’s top leadership and commended successful anti-Taliban drive in Swat during a visit to the northwestern valley this week, according to a White House spokesman Friday.

During the just-concluded visit, Jones, a retired Marines general, met with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

He discussed a “variety of issues of mutual concern to both countries, including the full spectrum of development and security matters,” National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer said.

“In particular, he reiterated our commitment to a long-term and comprehensive relationship with Pakistan,” the spokesman added in a statement.

General Jones also had the opportunity to travel to the Swat Valley and elsewhere in North West Frontier Province, “where he congratulated the Pakistani Army and Frontier Corps on the success of their security operations in the west and noted the tremendous sacrifices made by Pakistan’s security forces,” the statement said.

The national security advisor’s five-day trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan helped him view first-hand the current status of efforts in the light of President Obama’s strategy in the region.

In Afghanistan, General Jones met with Senior Afghan, U.S., and ISAF leadership and traveled to Kabul, Kandahar, Jalalabad, and Panjshir.

His travels allowed him to personally review efforts in the critical areas of security, development, and governance, the spokesman stated.
