PESHAWAR: Security forces formally launched military action ‘Khyber-1′ against terrorists in scattered areas of Bara in Khyber Agency on Friday.

On the first day of the military action, a security official claimed that at least 11 militants were killed. However, no further details have been issued so far.

“Khyber 1 [will have] a bad impact on Peshawar due to the geographical location of Bara, which is adjacent to the provincial capital,” said Capital City Police chief Muhammad Ijaz Khan while talking to The Express Tribune.

Khan added that as a result of the military action, displaced tribesmen and militants would enter Peshawar for shelter.

Moreover, Khan said Peshawar police is trying its best to handle the situation tactfully. In this respect, the city’s police is on high alert and keeping strict vigilance over the situation in Khyber Agency in the wake of the military action.

The banned Lashkar Islam (LI), headed by Mangal Bagh, is considered a notorious militant group in Bara.

PESHAWAR: At least nine suspected militants were killed and 10 others were injured in an operation against militants in Khyber Agency’s Bara area, sources told Dawn, adding that this operation has been named as Khyber I (Khyber one).

Intensifying their efforts to counter militants in Khyber, security forces have upped action in the region.

Senior security sources told Dawn that this was the first wave of a fresh offensive launched to clear Bara tehsil.

Sources said the main aim of the operation was to clear Khyber from Bara until the border of Tirah valley, following which the second phase of the operation will begin.

Curfew has been imposed in the area and people are not allowed to either enter or leave Bara.

Security forces have also blocked all routes leading to Bara and have surrounded its Malikdinkhel, Akakhel and Sipah areas.

Scores of families have started moving to safer places as the offensive against militant groups is intensifying. Jet fighters have also been seen flying in the area.

A day ago, 21 suspected militants were killed when fighter jets pounded positions of the outlawed Lashkar-i-Islam group in Akakhel.

Five hideouts of the Bara-based militant group were destroyed in the air strikes.

Khyber is among Pakistan’s seven semi-autonomous tribal districts near the Afghan border, rife with homegrown insurgents and foreign militants. These are also home to religious extremist organisations including Al Qaeda.

The plains of Bara hold strategic significance for militant groups as they connect the agency to the outskirts of Peshawar.

The area was being used by militants to put pressure on the provincial capital. In recent weeks, police and military posts in and around Peshawar have come under attack.

The key area also straddles the Nato supply line into Afghanistan.

Khyber also links several agencies to each other, serving as a north-south route within Fata. The region has been long fought over by a mix of militant organisations, including the TTP, the Ansarul Islam and Mangal Bagh’s Lashkar-i-Islam.

Peshawar: At least six militants were killed on Saturday in Khyber Agency asoperation 'Khyber 1' entered into its second day.

Official sources said security forces advancing in Sipah, Malikdinkhel and Akakhel areas engaged in clashes with militants.

The information, however, could not be independently verified as journalists have limited access to the tribal agency.

Sipah is a known stronghold of Lashkar-i-Islam while Akakhel and Malikdinkhel too have a sizable presence of militant elements.

These advancements by the army comes as part of the ongoing military operation Zarb-i-Azb which was initiated on June 15 against anti-state militants hiding in the North Waziristan Agency. The action was recently expanded to parts of Khyber.

Khyber is one of Pakistan’s seven semi-autonomous regions governed by tribal laws and lies near the Afghan border. The Taliban and other Al Qaeda-linked groups who stage attacks in both Pakistan and Afghanistan are also known to have strongholds in the zone.

So what happened here? Wasn't Khyber cleared just last year? Did some TTP from NWA flee to Khyber?

Recent my friend had made a visit to his howetown(Orakzai agency) for eid vacation and he said operation has also been started in Orakzai agency .

It seems like we are chasing them throughout Pakistan, hell even into GB

We will keep chasing our tail, until we make up our mind that there is no such thing as good-taliban, and tell the police to step in 100% and take care @ local level of all good tailbitches + ssp + lej etc etc etc. Fire at will and no questions asked should be the policy. Otherwise, welcome to Hell 2.0! :D
