Operation caught ISI “by surprise”

Hasan Suroor
LONDON: The BBC on Tuesday quoted an official of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) as claiming that it was “totally caught by surprise” by the U.S. commando operation in which Osama bin Laden was killed in a compound in Abbottabad, a garrison town 100 km from Islamabad. The intelligence “failure” was an “embarrassment” for the agency, he said.

The claim would fuel speculation about Pakistan's exact role in the circumstances leading to the discovery and death of the al-Qaeda leader.

“We were totally caught by surprise. They were in and out before we could react,” he reportedly told the BBC's Islamabad correspondent Owen Bennett-Jones, denying local residents' claims that Pakistani soldiers had asked them to switch off their lights an hour before the attack.

The official, who was not named, said the compound was “not on our radar.” It was raided in 2003 when under construction, but since then “the compound was not on our radar, it is an embarrassment for the ISI.”

Declaring “We're good, but we're not God,” he said: “This one failure should not make us look totally incompetent. Look at our track record. For the last 10 years, we have captured Taliban and al-Qaeda [militants] in their hundreds — more than any other countries put together.”

The official gave what the BBC described as “new or differing accounts” of Sunday's events. He claimed Osama's young daughter, aged 12 or 13, had said she saw her father shot. He said there were 17-18 people in the compound at the time of the attack and the Americans took away one person still alive, possibly a son of Osama.

Those who survived the attack included a wife, a daughter and eight or nine other children, “not apparently bin Laden's.” All had their hands tied by the Americans. His surviving Yemeni wife said they had moved to the compound a few months ago, according to the official.

Opinion: Its amusing how much control the USA has on Pakistans internal affairs. They really have you guys on a very tight leash huh?!:bounce::pakistan:

the future of pakistan is now in the policy makers

we should create a policy like iran or else we will be like iraq very soon

Wait a minute. The U.S. not only didn't mention that they were going to raid an HVT, they didn't tell the Pakistanis where it was. If the U.S. felt that the Pakistanis could spoil things, then the U.S. must believe that the ISI had some form of communication with Bin Laden - even though there were no phone or internet connections and OBL refused to use cell or satphones. Which implies that such contact could only be made by runner, which means that the U.S. is convinced the ISI knew where Obama bin Laden was.

What kind of "reaction" did this ISI official have in mind, exactly? Suddenly it's not so far-fetched to realize why OBL is in a military town rather than the boonies, that way whenever the ISI wanted to warn him they could call the nearest officer-neighbor to bang on Osama's door...

Which neighbor of OBL hasn't been interviewed yet? Hiya, Spooky, better make your way to the U.S. to spill your beans, lest your ISI colleagues kill you first.

No ISI was not informed becasue , Americans brought Bin Ladin in helicopters into Pakistan and killed him in that compound probbly funded by Afghan warlords, who got funds form Ramond davis and associates

If Pakistan Army or ISI was involved we would have likely caught him alive and he would have stated he had nothing to do with 911.

US has more to gain by killing binladin on Pakistani soil then in Afghanistan

The helicopter that went down , probbly was used to bring in Bin Ladin into Pakistan - and also carried all the family members inside it

We have lost thousands of soldiers and 30,000 civilians and it is time, we exit this war. Let Zardari and Musharaf answer why OBL was there, if he lived there 5 years. US has built routes from Uzbekistan and Kazakstan and Pakistan may not even be needed. I pray that US stops all aid since it was going in buying Musharaf's condos, farm houses in London and Zardari's pocket, Pakistan or its citizens never benefit from the aid anyway.

It's sad that Pakistan as a nation would have to bear the brunt of the recent events....the Pakistani public is obviously not privy to the secret deals of the ISI and the people the world calls terrorists...it's the corrupt politicians and non-transparent army men and the ever-so mysterious ISI which has put so much at stake...
all Pakistan needs is both internal and external transparency in the functioning of it's government. There is a severe trust deficit both between the insternational community and Pakistan and between the people of Pakistan and their government.
