Operating, maintaining and flying Sukhoi fighter aircraft is a Malaysia-India-Russia 'love story', says a senior Malaysian air force official.

Though a three-year trilateral arrangement nears its end, Russian and Indian officials are committed to reinforcing Malaysia's air defence and combat capability as far as the Sukhoi Su 30 MKM Flanker squadron is concerned.

The assurance came from Russia's warranty team leader Vladimir Konnov, from aircraft manufacturer Irkut Corporation, and Indian Air Force's (IAF) chief flight instructor Group Captain K.V.R. Raju.

Konnov stressed the need for the arrangement to continue in some form.

Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) 11th Squadron commanding officer Lt. Col. Mohamad Asghar Khan said Malaysia's 'love story' with Russia and India began in 1994 with the purchase of 18 MiG-29N Fulcrum aircraft under a RM1.3 billion deal, New Straits Times reported.

Asghar said Malaysia's involvement with the two countries had since blossomed to a 'love affair' with the Su-30MKM purchase.

'We have come a long way and hope to reinforce our relationship with Russia and India over the long term to chart our air defence and combat capability.

'I believe strongly in this partnership, especially with the support of the proven Irkut Corporation and India's Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd in terms of obtaining reliable spares and equipment,' he said, referring to the pioneer batch of six pilots, four engineers and 53 technical crew sent to Russia and over 100 technical crew sent to India for training.

Malaysia's newest air base in Gong Kedak, a town in Kelantan state, is the home of the Flanker.

'This is a strong demonstration of a high level of friendship and diplomacy which is very commendable,' said Raju, who leads a team of four instructor pilots, one weapons systems officer, two engineers, 22 technicians and two administrative servicemen.

While the rest complete their two-year tour of duty in July, the IAF pilots will be retained until August.

Raju said the trilateral Russian-Indian-Malaysian collaboration was something unique as it provided a stepping stone for the country to groom its next generation of airmen.

'Thus far, our assessment of the RMAF crew shows they are of an exceptional high standard and I am confident the current crew will pass on their expertise and experience to others to take Malaysia to the next level of competency.'

Konnov said that while his team was responsible for the aircraft's serviceability, performance, snag rectification and technical support, they also ensured the Malaysians mastered the required skills.

'The Sukhoi is a very complex and complicated aircraft to operate. As Malaysia is still in its infancy, it will be wise to retain the Russian and Indian specialists to fully acquire the proficiency and realise its potential.'

It's great to see such appreciation for the SU-30 esspecially when Malaysia already oporates F-18's.

Looks like the SU-30 is building an impressive repuation :cool:

Sukhoi is very Complex indeed .
Man-machine interface is not good , so puts lot of work load on Pilot .
What we call Sensor fusion is missing .
There are still analogue Dials and components on MKI , we even had one accident bcoz of that .
It needs a better fully digital Glass cockpit to reduce work load , so that every info is available on Display .

This is base model of su30

Look closely at amount of Analogue dials and components .



This is SU30mki with some Digital displays but still some Analogue components are even now.





Now lastly compare it with Su35 - This is what we call Digital cockpit to reduce workload on Pilot

Kuala Lumpur, April 19 (IANS) Come September, the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will take over the operation of its Sukhoi aircraft and end the two-year help from Indian and Russian experts.
Fifty-odd Russian and Indian technical crew, engineering officers and instructor pilots will leave following the end of their two-year service tenure.:cheers:

While the Indians provided flight instructors, engineering officers, technical experts and administrative staff here, the Russians provided their test pilots and engineers to verify, certify and standardise the SU-30 MKM Flanker.

It is learnt that the RMAF will still utilise the services of 300-odd staff from local maintenance company ATSC Sdn Bhd to support a similar strength of its own crew to continue running the base.

The New Straits Times Monday said two dozen RMAF pilots will by then be fully trained to fly the Sukhois. The present team includes a woman pilot.

RMAF chief Gen Rodzali Daud said the departure of the expatriates would pose a strong challenge to the local airmen and women to stand on their own and operate the multi-role combat aircraft.

“We are confident (that we can) run the base and flight operations by ourselves, by which time there will be proper ‘life support’ maintenance and support facilities available,” he said following a visit by Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Rodzali said: “These pioneer RMAF crew members will train younger batches to replace them.”

Hamidi said there were plans to expand the base to accommodate a new terminal for the arrival and departure of large transport aircraft, like the C-130 Hercules and VVIP jets.

The base here is now Malaysia’s foremost jet-fighter facility. It was established in 1993. By 2009, the ground-based 402nd air defence squadron and 11th Sukhoi Squadron were established. There are more than 1,000 servicemen and civilians stationed at the base.
