OP-ED: How do we remember Ayub Khan?

Nope I meant nationalization of industry route not like proper cammunist
Bhutto's policies were bad

in the 3rd world countries like BD , india ,PK there is a very simple formula to keep the population under control: Provide jobs and make sure their stomachs are (partially) full. And make sure its sustainable. If these conditions are met rulers can get away with almost anything.
it doesn't matter if you are multi-ethnic country or homogenous state.
Contrary to popular belief Ayub didn't give U-2 bases to US (which led to USSR becoming very hostile to Pakistan) it was Surhawardy's deal with Eisenhower
it was beneficial for Pakistan to ally with US. And i fully support it (not that it matters )

I understand that you guys live in a very difficult neighbourhood but now that the mess in Afghanistan is mostly solved (imo should take a few more decades ) and Mr 56'' has managed to open new front with China . Grow the economy and focus on development (i know its growing but it can do better).

All the best.

why can you not stop people like this? instead of moderating behavior of the members some of you actually join in. any of you who feel the need to abuse Pakistan and its leaders, past or present, should not be moderators
So if I praise Zardari you will join me right?
Long live Asif Zardari - long live 10% corruption because according to you it cannot be called bad
He talked shit about literally every ethnic group of Pak that ever existed including punjabi, Bangali, Urdu-speakers etc
So old school man of a young nation handed way too much power for his own good

He wanted the nation to become strong, knew how to get the economic engines going, I genuinely believe he was a Pak nationalist at heart that's why distain for "ethnic realities" of multi ethnic nation but really lacked the political intelect as expected
Didn't like decentralization wanted to rule people through whips and shape them into a model society (the way he enviosned it atleast liberal, educated, patriotic but under him- he is to remain a strong man rulling a strong nation)

A troubled personality, way too self-obssessed very old school dictatorial style of turning the society into what he enviosned it to be

I wonder if in todays age he had anything to say about the waziris nowing his habit of badmouthing everyone?

It interesting that even he knew

"He told Altaf Gauhar, the bureaucrat he was closest to, that he was building the second capital (today Sher-e-Bangla Nagar) in Dhaka because sooner or later the Bengalis would move out of Pakistan and would need the place for themselves."
He was the ultimate brown sahib graduate of the colonial school. But he didn’t do anything other than push technocrats much like Musharraf did and put this facade of progress.
He was loyal to no one except himself, the entire gist of “friends not masters” is him making a case for himself and not Pakistan.

Hindustanis always end up showing their true colors, regardless which side of the border they are on.

Then you should remove the photo and statues of Jinnah from every where...

Perhaps re-write history and make Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan or G M Syed your founding father...

He was a great leader. Arguably the best leader we had. He did so much for the economy and development.

The average economic growth rate of Pakistan was higher than the average of the world economy during the 1960s. Average annual real GDP growth was 6.8 percent at that time. The policy of privatisation and industrialization was introduced by Ayub Khan. Pakistan became Asia's fastest growing economy in the Ayub era. During the same period, Pakistan was seen as a model of economic development around the world. Karachi under the Ayub era was regarded as an economic role model. South Korea for example replicated Karachi second "Five-Year Plan." The World Financial Center in Seoul was designed and modeled after Karachi. Look where South Korea is today. Pakistan made great advances in industrial and agricultural sectors, dams were built. Pakistan continues to benefit from (central planning) and development projects undertaken during his rein. Not to mention the planning of Islamabad as Pakistan capital.

His biggest mistake was not invading Indian occupied Kashmir in 1962 when India was at war with China. He should have launched a massive full scale invasion of IOK.

He was the real founder of Pakistan. There was no government in Pakistan from 47 to 58

It is once again October. And once again, for my generation, it is a moment when we journey back into the foggy lanes of memory. We recall October 1958, when General Mohammad Ayub Khan, in cahoots with President Iskandar Mirza, placed the state of Pakistan under martial law on day seven of the month.
And October 7 in those days was talked about as a great day because of the arrival of a visionary leader in then Pakistan. Syed Badrul is seeing through the BAL prism and not from the eyes of the then common people who welcomed him as the savior from the bickering politicians of those days. And he satisfied people's expectations until probably the Pakistan-India war of 1965.

Every time he travelled to Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, all the students of our school and those of the girls’ school on the other side of the road were made to stand, tiny Pakistani flags in hand, to greet the president, for that would be the route he would be taking from the airport to wherever he would be staying. Now that we recall those days, it strikes us as rather queer that in his own country he was being treated as a visiting foreign head of state.
This Badrul the journalist is talking very innocent but his only aim is to criticize Ayub Khan for no reason at all. This Badrul is talking about small students waving flags along the streets to welcome him. What a funny criticism when every President is given welcome this way throughout the world and Pakistan was still only a newly established country.

When this Badrul criticizes this flag-waving, he is probably silent when all the people of BD are doing boat-racing throughout the country to celebrate the birthday of Hasina Bibi and catching cold.

So, I wonder why Badrul is targeting flag waving?
Ayub Khan surrounded himself with people who in the end turned against him, leaving him in a state of shock. In 1963, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, at the time foreign minister as well as secretary general of Ayub’s Convention Muslim League, publicly advanced the notion that the general be made Pakistan’s president-for-life.
This Badrul is finding fault for which Ayub was not guilty, but guilty were people like ZA Bhutto. He betrayed him. Actually, nothing would have happened unless there was a war against India that Pakistan had to compromise.
Three generals after him emulated him in seizing power and making a mess of politics in Pakistan; and two generals in Bangladesh, formerly in the Pakistan army, lorded it over the Bengali republic for a good number of years. The tombstone on Ayub’s grave in his village was vandalized a few years ago.
Thus the chronicle of a lapsed, forgotten strongman named Mohammad Ayub Khan.
I would criticize Yahya Khan, Zia-ul Haq, and partially General Musharraf in Pakistan. I would also criticize General Ershad for being an Indian lapdog who conspired to kill General/ President Ziaur Rahman.

But, I have reasons not to criticize General Ziaur Rahman. Like Ayub Khan, he was also another savior of east Pakistan/ Bangladesh. Only Zia can be compared with Ayub Khan. But, Ayub's achievents were far greater in both the wings of Pakistan.

Guys, I ask you to note the partial list of progress and development works undertaken during the time of Ayub Khan.

- All the Zilla roads (from this Zilla to other Zillas) were expanded and paved
- Kaptai Dam for electricity was built
- Chittagong Steel Mills, Chittagong Cable Factory, Chndraghona Paper Mills, Chittagong Dry Dock, Ghorasal Fertilizer Factory, and many hundred others were built during his time.
- He took back the half of Naaf Dariya from Burma and set the centerline of that river as the common boundary. Burma had to withdraw its troops from the north of Naaf Dariya.

I wonder what Hasina Bibi is doing to return Rohingya refugees. Badrul Mia should say something about this important matter.

We are a nation (two nations) composed of people who like to spit in the sky and it comes down right on our faces. We should be more respectful towards our predecessors who tried their best to make progress in international affairs and develop the country.

Do not please forget Queen Elizabeth had visited both wings of Pakistan during the tenure of President Ayub Khan.

Even a 10 year old could predict what would happen in the next 20 years years.

No, Ayub was not a troubled personality. Both our countries need strong and disciplined personalities to develop.

IK may be one such person. Unfortunately, BD is not gifted with them, at least not yet.

My grand father was beaten badly by some goons hired by Nawab of Kalabagh for openly supporting Fatimah Jinnah during the elections of 1965.

This political beating has been happening all the time in both BD and Pakistan. It does not prove that Ayub was worse than any other political leader. A President must be judged by his national achievements in industries, education, and the social uplifting.

It was Ayub Khan in whose time BD started irrigation of rice fields during the winter. BD is now feeding its large population of 169 million.

It was Ayub Khan's time when the first Polytechnic Institutions were built in all the District towns in the east totaling 17 institutions.

We must evaluate his achievements instead of criticizing him for a political goon to beat an activist from another party.
