Only 900,000 people pay taxes in Pakistan: Mandviwalla

I am not sure how posters of Pakistan really beleive this article...How can you run a nation with 900,000 people paying taxes....This article must have been written with a different context....AT least my impression is that all the employee class in gov and private sector would have taxdeducted at source...If this artcile is true...then does that mean that the employee class in pakitsan is less than 900,000? This is not correct.

Finance Minister Saleem Mandviwalla said on Saturday around 1.5 million people have the national tax number (NTN) out of which only 0.9 million pay their taxes.

According to a private TV channel, the minister, while talking about terminating the requirement of NTN while purchasing a car, said this would not affect the tax collections negatively because people were issued NTN while purchasing a new car but they destroyed it afterwards.

He said the Finance Ministry was reviewing the flat rates of agricultural tube-wells and if they were approved, then the subsidies would be allocated promptly.

About the new budget, Mandviwalla said the federal budget for the upcoming financial year 2013-14 would be prepared by the new government not the caretaker set-up.

If the new national assembly and the elected government came into before the elections, then they would prepare and present the next budget; otherwise, the caretaker government would prepare it and the interim cabinet would give it a temporary ascent whilst its upholding and implementation would be subjected to the final approval of the elected parliament that would come into power after the elections.

Only 900,000 pay taxes: Mandviwalla | The Nation

so what does our intrepid Fin.M plans to do about it? - the last Fin.M paid NIL income-tax - what about you Mr. mandviwalla?

I would like the minister to justify his salary and the size of his department (FBR) in view of such a small tax net.

Why would you have a department of thousands of people with millions in expense to manage just 900K people ?

How much is the tax rate in Pakistan? and how much income is exempt i.e. what is the income tax base?

How many Indians pay Tax numbers wise?

Around 40 million - but the base is high - 1.8 lakhs Rs for men, 2.5 lakhs Rs for women and senior citizens. Plus there are indirect taxes and cess on everything so everybody ends up paying taxes.

That's quite low comparatively, but sales tax is steep.

The number of effective tax payers as on March 31, 2011 was 3,35,79,831

Only 2.77 percent of India's population pay income tax

It's probably close to 40 million now.

Vat tax should be 20% as its Favored by business But corporate Rate should be around 15% not 35% that can only be achieved by bringing more people in the tax net.

Why would corporate's prefer such a high VAT? our's is 4%, personal income tax is 35%, corporate tax starts from 32%.

What is the relation of personal taxes with FDI?
On the contrary Singapore with higher taxes where no one escapes taxes has good FDI influx.
