LAHORE - The prices of onion in Lahore Badami Bagh wholesale market has shot to Rs1,500 per 40kg from Rs1,000 per 40kg during last couple of days which will go further up by the end of this month as the neighbouring country India has placed huge order of onion import from Pakistan.

The retail price of onion has jacked up to Rs60 per kg from Rs40/kg in open market when the export of this vegetable is in normal volume which would go up to 550,000 ton this year from earlier annual export size of 250,000, market sources said.

Vegetable Exporter and Importer Association president Shabbir Ahmed said that with onion prices shooting up dramatically in Delhi, the Indian government has asked the state-owned company to import 25,000 tons of the key kitchen staple quickly.
Moreover, the Indian commerce ministry has been asked to consider increasing the minimum export price of onion to ensure that no onion goes out of India during these days of crisis.

He said that Pakistan, in this situation, has started to fetch higher export orders for onion not only from India but also from Bangladesh who also returned to the international markets to overcome local shortage in supplies, he said.

Shabbir said that Pakistan has registered an increase in demand from the overseas markets in the last couple of weeks while India has also started importing onion from Pakistan via Wagah border.
On an average, some 10 trucks of onions have been crossing the Wagah border daily to enter into India from Pakistan.
Each truck carries some 15-20 tons of onions.

He said that presently, onions from Balochistan are available in the markets nationwide which increases cost in Punjab while Sindh would begin harvesting the new crop from October, and will continue in full swing until November-December.
He said that Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and UAE also import onion from Pakistan.

He said at least four shiploads of onions are leaving for Malaysia and Dubai from Karachi, carrying around 150 containers of the commodity and each container has a capacity of about 25-30 tons.
He said that Malaysia and Dubai are the two leading buyers of Pakistani onion, while Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh also import the commodity from Pakistan.

There are multiple threads I responded to spreading false information from IK's paid buddies that the exports have fallen and everything looks like it is hitting the fan. When did it not hit the fan for IK and his people???? But it hasn't hit the fan for the country, in fact from this and other threads and REAL numbers, the economic fan is running at a much better speed than it has ever been.......confirmed and now sponsored by the Bloomberg, World Bank, and even the NASDAQ. Good job Pakistan, keep improving and go high up!!

In the mean while in India...the price of Onions have come down from 80 Rs to 45 Rs. in last 10 days.

More supply would do this. Demand and Supply, two most important forces that change prices so much, isn't it awesome??

I don't know when was the last time you looked at the language we ALL communicate in on this forum. I think it was English. Care to translate the two liner? I have a feeling, its something like an short two liner verbal attack like IK does "Current rulers have done the most corruption ever in the past three years"....(no proofs provided), then, the next verbal attack starts!!

Import it from Afghanistan one piece weighs around 1/2Kg .

But thank you Pakistan for Onion Export you put your neighbours above yourself .

. . .
how is it that we have surplus onions while india and bangladesh are lacking them?
aren't the agro-terrains similar over the subcontinent?
either we have better conditions for onion or they never thought much about growing onion lol

.
bangladesh are lacking them?
we don't have much land to cultivate and we are leaving India for onion Import as they suddenly increase onion price or ban export. Now we have starting buying from Pakistan and Myanmar
