  • In the 1,185 days, 348 defence personnel have killed themselves on duty, particularly those deployed for longer periods in terror-hit J&K or the insurgency-affected northeast.
  • The MoD, however, says that most of the suicides occur due to personal reasons, including land disputes back home.

BENGALURU: The body of Narendra R, the soldier who shot himself on duty in South Kashmir's Anantnag arrived in the city late Monday. Despite his family having apprehensions that he committed suicide, his name will enter the Ministry of Defence's record of soldiers who committed suicide.

According to MoD data for the period January 1, 2014 to March 31, 2017, at least one defence personnel from the three wings of the armed forces has committed suicide every three days, and most from the army.

Notwithstanding the fact that some of these reasons are true, a colonel who has served multiple tenures in the forward areas on the western front says: "Long tenures at these stations take a toll on the mental and physical health of a personnel.Training and the pride of serv ing the nation keeps us going, but sometimes it gets difficult."

Another officer says that if the personnel is preoccupied with problems back home then it becomes more difficult to cope with the strenuous conditions in these locations.

On its part, the MoD says it has been investing in creating a better environment for defence personnel and that it has trained a large number of officers to counsel those in distress. Yet, it doesn't seem enough.

Among the three services, the army is the worst affected with 276 of the 348 soldiers who committed suicide, nearly 80%, belonging to it. Navy reported the least (12).

. .
In a country of more than 1.2 billion people, the humans are the cheapest commodity. For people sitting in sandal wood chambers, dressed in designer clothes, isolated from the ugly and poor surroundings, a poor soldier or a junior officer putting his a$$ in the danger and breaking sweat and braving weather is nothing more than a replaceable toy.

The same class of people also join taliban, daesh, alqaida and various dozens of terrorist groups in large numbers as well. Does not make them on the right side still!

French served under Russian and German flags during WW2 as well...does not make them morally right..

I thought first that they died due to disease, enemy fire etc etc,,,, only one death of this type is alarming...
it shows civil insecurity and sense of purpose and pride... an its leader job to infuse thses into soldiers....

Then all the Kashmiri Sikhs/Hindus and many Muslims are fighting on the right side as they never join taliban, daesh, alqaida and various dozens of terrorist groups you mentioned

anyone who serves on the indian army would suicide though.

imagine being deployed to occupy people's lands

imagine being deployed to fight a war you cant win

imagine being paid too little to live a decent life

imagine the high amount of accidents

imagine being boxed up in a cupboard coffin and left for dead.

imagine being disavowed by the people you swear to protect - the bengali officer who served in indian army for decades and was found to be a non-indian citizen.

When i think india i think "cannot make it" - "cmi"

That funny - I too know ALOT of Singaporeans who to what ever it takes to get out of NS - here there is no need to imagine - it is the reality.

Also It is a know fact that standards for training there HAD to be lowered with the simple reason that new recruits can't handle it - heck it is Sad that many injured themselves and few passed away

300 suicides in an army of 1.3 million is a rounding error

. . .
did you compare it to suicide rate of the civilian population ?
That would be asking too much for the pea brained characters who start such threads

True. A larger percentage of Indian farmers committed suicide.

.
That is around 120 armed personal killing themselves every year. The size of Indian armed personal is upwards of 4 million. So in percentage terms 0.003% armed personal kill themselves every year. I guess this suicide rate should be much lower than that of the general population.

Well thats a big relief. The average Indian has such a terrible life he commits suicide more often than his murdering compatriot in the Indian army.
