We do have proven ways of drastically cutting down fatality rate. It's called vaccination, face mask and good hygiene. At this point, the cost maintaining zero COVID policy is vastly outweighing its benefits. China had 11 million natural deaths in 2019 before COVID from various causes, COVID would only be one of those. The whole purpose of vaccination is so you can start relaxing these strict measures and return to normality.Zero policy will only be lifted when they have found a proven medicine that can cure serious symptoms of covid-19 that prevent Chinese going into ICU. I think China are not far from it.
They have their reason for such policy. Even a 50000 death covid related are not tolerated by mass Chinese. Xi will not risk this. A population with 1.4 billion population and only 5300 death. Look at India, it's 100 times more than China in terms of death for covid. And some still question Xi zero covid policy.
The population is tired of being dragged up in the middle of the night for COVID testing and are tired of lockdowns. Nobody is going to seriously invest in an economy that can grind to a halt as soon as a case pops up. And yes, Xi deserves every bit of scrutiny for his policies. He's not a god.
News flash, people die naturally every year. If not COVID, then it's something else. As long as number of yearly natural deaths are not significantly above normal baseline, then it's perfectly fine. There are still about 10% of the population that are not vaccinated, that's 140 million people, if the pandemic spread in these people, it is still a disaster. I don't know why China hasn't vaccinated 100% of its population by now.
Also, China has been very slow to roll out the 3rd or 4th shot of vaccine. US and Europe are nearly back to normality, while China's economy is struggling under the weight of this outdated policy.
