India has conveyed to Russia its unease over Moscow’s purported “secret talks” with Islamabad to explore possibility of its joining the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

New Delhi conveyed to Moscow through diplomatic channels that it was opposed to the proposed CPEC as it would include areas that were part of Jammu and Kashmir and some areas that were under illegal occupation of Islamabad.

It also made clear that given the traditional friendly relations between India and Russia, New Delhi would expect Moscow not to be oblivious of its sensitivity, sources told the DH.

Moscow, however, told New Delhi that though Russia was keen to step up its engagements with Pakistan, it had not yet discussed with Islamabad the possibility of joining the CPEC.

“Reports appearing in Pakistan’s media about some 'secret talks' between Russia and Pakistan on the creation of the CPEC do not correspond to the realities. The possibility of Russia joining this initiative is not being discussed with Islamabad,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russian government issued a statement on Tuesday, apparently after New Delhi conveyed its concerns to Moscow.

This is not the first time that New Delhi frowned over Russia’s growing ties with Pakistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier this year told Russian president Vladimir Putin to “reflect upon” New Delhi’s concerns over Moscow's growing defence cooperation with Pakistan.

What raised hackles in New Delhi this time are reports appearing in some newspapers published in Pakistan about “secret talks” between Moscow and Islamabad over Russia joining the CPEC.

Russia will have to join CPEC at one point. After all the Chinese money is bank rolling their economy and they would want to expand their economic horizons. The last time the Soviet Union (Russia) invested in Pakistan was in the 1970s. Now they are willing to invest $5 billion and this will increase.

This track has been adopted by the Chinese since a long time. You have forget to mentioned the projects which the Chinese doing on Brahmaputra River and diverting the waters.

Republic of India did started projects along the borders but the proxies are hampering development by carrying out terrorist attacks , smuggling of drugs, fake currency etc.

Uri terrorist attack took place on 18 September 2016 and the Russian Federation and Pakistan military exercises took place after those terrorist attacks and this is the reason Indian Government has objected and even Russian Federation is aware about the Indian reservations.

One Belt, One Road not international venture: India

India has hardened its position on the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative of China, calling it a national initiative of the communist country and not an international venture.

New Delhi made it clear that it viewed OBOR initiative distinctly from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which was also conceived by Beijing, but was being set up by over 50 nations collectively.

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar made it clear that New Delhi viewed OBOR as the one designed by Beijing in pursuit of its own strategic objectives, but not as an inclusive one in which opinions of other “interested or affected” countries had not been taken into account.

“Where we are concerned, this (OBOR) is a national Chinese initiative,” Jaishankar said in Singapore on Monday. He was replying to questions after delivering a lecture at the International Institute of Strategic Studies.

“The Chinese devised it, created a blueprint (for it). It was not an international initiative they discussed with the whole world, or with the countries which in someway or the other have opinions (about it) or which are affected by it,” he said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has since 2013 been articulating the idea of a “21st century Maritime Silk Road” reviving economic connectivity between the Pacific and Indian Oceans and linking China’s coastline with Southeast Asia, the Gulf and the eastern coast of Africa. He has also been proposing a “Silk Road Economic Belt” reviving the ancient link between China and Mediterranean through central Asia.

The two projects are now together called OBOR initiative and China has been pulling all stops over the past year to elicit support from other countries.

Beijing’s new plan to spread its tentacles further in the Indian Ocean region and Central Asia, however, caused unease in New Delhi, which has already been wary of China’s strategic assets encircling India.

“If this (OBOR) is something on which they want a larger buy in, then they need to have larger discussions, and those have not happened,” he said, apparently indicating that Beijing had not taken New Delhi into confidence before launching the mega plan.

He also pointed out that the OBOR and the AIIB were different in nature. “We had no reservation about joining the AIIB,” he said, adding that India’s decision to join the AIIB was based on “a very sensible calculation” that the bank would provide a new source of financing.

Its a known fact that Russian Federation and China are together at UNSC which we have already saw during the Ukraine crisis and even with the sanctions on North Korea and with the Iran Nuclear programme.
