New Delhi: On the National Technology Day commemorated to mark the anniversary of Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed the "courage" shown by the then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

"Greetings to everyone, especially our industrious scientists and those passionate about technology, on National Technology Day," Modi tweeted.

"We remain grateful to our scientists & the then political leadership for the courage shown in Pokhran in 1998," he added.

Since 1999, May 11 is commemorated as the National Technology Day to mark India's scientific prowess and technological advancements.

It was the same date in 1998 when India successfully conducted first among the five nuclear tests in Pokhran under the leadership of Vajpayee. The tests showcased India's might to the entire world.

A write-up on Narendramodi. In website refers to an earlier speech of Modi in which he had said, "The world is well aware of the Pokhran tests. Under Atal ji's leadership, successful tests were carried out and the entire world was witness to India's might. The scientists made the nation proud.

Recalling the nearly two-decade-old development, Modi said, "After the first series of tests the world community placed sanctions on India. On 13th May 1998, Atal ji again called for tests, thus showing that he was made of a different mettle. If we had had a weak PM, he or she would have got scared on the same day. But Atal ji was different. He did not get scared."

Lauding the role the people of Pokhran played by keeping silent during the nuclear tests, Modi said, "People of Pokhran must be lauded for maintaining silence during entire duration when the tests were planned and conducted. They placed interest of the nation above everything else."

What Atal Bihari did instead of hailing his foolishness he should be condemned, Since because of this foolishness Pakistan is now nuclear power with more warheads as compares to India,

Pakistan should say thanks to Atal Bihari.

On May 11th 1998, Pokhran II commenced with five underground nuclear detonation tests. Following Operation Shakti, India became the sixth nuclear superpower in the world; a step which was widely condemned by many nations for threatening world peace. Since 1999, May 11th is observed as National Technology Day to commemorate India’s scientific advancement. (Arun Jetlie/HT Photo)

By involving only a select group of scientists and politicians,India managed to secretly carry out its nuclear operations without being detected by American spy satellites or its neighbouring countries in South Asia. (HT Photo)

Pakistan already had nuclear weapons. It's not Atal Bihari's foolishness. Instead we already tested in 1974. There was already news that Pakistan is developing nuclear weapons, by the time we did Pokran-2 Pakistan was all set.
Know some history before you put out your brain farts here.

Number of war heads is just for d**k measuring contest, like the US is doing, you don't need more than 4 war heads in a conventional war.

Agreed Pakistan have the nukes since 80s but they are waiting for a chance that BJP provided them in a plate, I am happy the nation got Nuclear status and can nuke to dust India who invaded our holiest place.

Lakh di lanat on starting nuclear arms race in South asia.
Moron BJP ediot.
Nothing to be proud of here.

You claim you are ex.mil. :woot: How did you not no some basic things. Talks immaturely.
This is not a game, 'I test one now you test one'. Even though they had already developed weapons, Pakistan had no clue India would test one. Leave Pakistan, even US had no clue about it.
Now the second rhetoric nuking India is quite a fancy (Not to forget India includes Punjab) that you sound like a Pakistani, rather both of you speak in the same tone. ahm! ahm!

Now, the last part. If an ISI funded group want to start another sectarian violence in India, we had to avoid it any cost. The mil operation was indeed brutal and unforgivable. But the party that carried out such a massaccare is now ruling Punjab:what:. So, the Punjabi's are okay with such a thing? Oh may be Majority of Punjabis are not terrorist sympathizers rather they identify themselves as Indians.

If you could just put a pic of Khalistan flag and tell me what does that flag signify?

Way better than someone who asked people to eat grass so that they can have bombs and guns

Testing nuclear weapons was a strategic blunder. At the time Pakistan had weapons and a response was certian. Had india waited it could have tested weapons now or in 5-10 years and forced off Pakistan nuclear program via western forces. India was already a declared nuclear state in 1974 when.it stole nuclear material from a civilian reactor (by the way no one has ever done this.its unique to india.not even we did that to our Karachi reactor)

Whether or not India had tested it was certain that Pakistan itself had Nuclear Weapons.

Many could consider the confirmations as a blessing that warded off ill-conceived military actions between the two.

Best to ignore the false flaggers totally buddy.

when.it stole nuclear material from a civilian reactor

India didn't "steal" nuclear material.

The material (produced Pu-239) always belonged to India....India just reneged on its promise not to use it for WMD purposes.

BJP policies have always resulted in huge flops or negative results

1) Giving Pakistan excuse and opportunity to test their nuclear weapons

2) Making a big issue about cow slaughter when the laws have been in place since decades

3) Publicly talking about Baluchistan

4) Taking KY's case to ICJ

5) Issue loud statements about using water already allocated to India under IWT

6) Bragging to complete ghar wapsi by 2021

7) Building Ram temple in Ayodhya

8) Implementing Uniform civil code

9) Repealing article 370

While meekly surrendering on Paris agreement, Nuclear liability law, Drug IP agreement etc.

Indians deserves better nationalist party which can demonstrate better acumen.

(by the way no one has ever done this.its unique to india.not even we did that to our Karachi reactor)

Also give me a clear source that says KANUPP is not a typical CANDU reactor for this to happen.

India was getting blue prints of Pakistan's nuclear technology throughout 90's so they managed to build some primitive centrifuge, which they so keenly wanted to show to the world.
Where as regarding Pakistan, they thought US would not let test.
