On Centre’s Request, Twitter Blocks Accounts, Tweets Over Kashmir Content

Kashmiri users and activists have received official legal complaints from Twitter, warning that their online content could be acted upon in the future as well.

New Delhi: Twitter has received a complaint from the Modi government, asking it block over 100 accounts and tweets that have been found “propagating objectionable content”. Most of the content and accounts appear to involve Kashmir and Kashmiri issues.

It’s unclear on how many accounts or tweets Twitter has officially blocked. Many of the tweets linked in the official complaint from the ministry of electronics and information technology are still accessible while others lead to suspended accounts.

Multiple local Kashmiri online media reported the development first. WithKashmir.Org in particular reported that multiple Kashmiri activists received an official complaint from Twitter and that several of them have reported that they have either been blocked or shadow banned.

On August 24, 2017, the IT ministry sent a letter to Twitter, asking the company to block the content under Section 69A of the IT Act.

“Based on recommendations of the committee and looking at the sensitivity of the request, it is hereby directed to Twitter to block/remove 115 Twitter handles/tweets in the interest of public order as well as for preventing any kind of cognizable offense…,” the letter states.

Twitter has put both the letter and the list of Twitter content to be blocked online. According to local Kashmiri media, a number of Pakistani users have also received similar warnings from Twitter.

The email sent out by the social media company states that “The correspondence [from the Modi government] claims that your account is in violation of Indian law. Please note we may be obligated to take action regarding the content identified in the complaint in the future. Please let us know by replying to this email as soon as possible if you decide to voluntarily remove the content identified on your account.”

Twitter also seems to acknowledge the haziness of knowing which Twitter accounts are “Indian or Pakistani”. For instance, a tweet that allegedly “pays tribute” to a dead militant shows up with a warning sign that says “this tweet… has been withheld in India”

Amongst the 100 odd objectionable tweets and accounts, one tweet flagged was not about Kashmir at all, but instead focused on rising cow vigilante violence in India.

Social media censorship over politically controversial topics is not a new development.

Last year, Facebook ran into controversy over censoring Indian journalists, activists and film-makers over similar “objectionable” Kashmir content. As The Wire had reported at the time, that experience offered insight into the way social media giants view politically controversial material, the way they hand out punishments and – disturbingly – how they act as a final arbiter of what is appropriate and what is not.

Wise move, all these twitter accounts were spreading terror propaganda. Hindustan times make a story since one of their Pak based journalist got this mail from twitter. Pak journalist is vile and use hate message from her account.

When it comes to censoring content on Twitter. Indians would say yeah, its the right thing to do, they are spreading fake news.

When indians seen a China uncensored video, they will agree with every single thing the joker host said about China.

Looks like India is not much different from China, blocking twitter, darjeeling internet ban :D

Few observations:
  1. terrorists of one country are freedom fighters for others, grey area. You can see depends on your lens
  2. Social media is great leveler, Baloch twitter accounts are blocked then it is condemned by Indian and praised by pakistani and vise versa
  3. India is more open and accepts different opinion. Social media worriers are not kidnapped and found dead in karachi/ Lahore
  4. India does not put firewall which blocks any news across the world and allows only CPC approved apps.
Everyone is naked in the this world, you will bigger d**k based on your lens :) period

Whatever man.

The censorship is real. Selective censorship is a form of censorship. India's grip on its media is no diff from China.

Even when Al-Qaeda/ISIS was using twitter to spread its message. It was twitter that bans these account. Not the USA government.

Your knowledge on this subject is weak, just like your arrangement.

Have fun making fun for the chinese censorship, you guys are no better in your fake, failed "democracy"

Running away with making general statement and putting flag of ZW tells another story. Twitter is partly owned by Arab prince and completely blocked by China, forcing people to use home made app.

The chest stumping is real.

Since China is largest owner of USA bond. Does that mean the Chinese has influence over USA policy?

You are so ignorant, shut up trap and stop embarrassing yourself :D

The patriot act is there for a reason.

This isn't enough. A way more rigorous policing of the internet is required in India considering the amount of seditious material and activities goin on these days.

Terrorists have incited riots in Kashmir with Whatsapp.

GoI needs a dedicated dept. seperate from I&B and Home Ministries just to keep a watch on anti-India activities and weed out the threats.

10 accounts here and 20 accounts there just won't cut it. India has a population of 1.25billion people. You need a policing force commensurate with the size of the traffic.

I urge the India government to implement a system where chest stumpier would be ban from accessing overseas site.

This will ensure the clean and pleasant experience for internet users around the world.
