This is the Big one that many scientists have been expecting. Even if the vaccines are not as effective, I hope everyone that has the opportunity, gets vaccinated and boosted, so we can get through this wave, which many hope will be the last big one.

You mean the variant that is less dangerous than the delta variant?
But spreads much faster, with a larger number of cases in a much shorter time span creating much greater stress on public health systems. Even with much lower hospitilzation and fatality rates per million, the sheer number of new cases means Omicron will create a higher absolute number of people with severe symptoms.

Another possibility that seems to be overlooked is that a widespread outbreak of Omicron increases its probibilities of finding the right host with the right combination of compromised immunity and other conditions to mutate into something even more dangerous: a coronavirus variant that is both highly transmissable and highly pathogenic. This is probably the biggest danger with Omicron.

This is the real risk - strain on Healthcare, economic impact of sick people and the wider spread increasing chances of mutation.

That's actually quite a detailed and extensive article by the Dailymail.

Yes, even if it’s relatively less dangerous, it can still be dangerous, and there can be lingering effects. Minimizing infections should still be a goal, to prevent the emergence of another variant.

The longer this goes on, the knock on effects on the rest of the healthcare system is causing us to not be able to catch potentially life threatening conditions early with screenings and early intervention. Supply chain disruptions are also causing some hospitals to substitute medications in some cancer treatments.

God's punishing the world for the widespread fornication taking place. Tinder, Tiktok and Onlyfans needs to be banned. Or else we move on to phase 2 of punishments. May God spare the pious people.

Omicron wave will crash on US with 60% of people infected by March and 140 MILLION new infections - but 90% will never show symptoms, University of Washington says
  • Researchers at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation said Omicron could cause about 140 million new COVID infections from January to March
  • Infections were expected to peak at 2.8 million new daily cases on January 28
  • Omicron would eventually infect about 60 percent of all Americans
  • But the majority will show no symptoms and have fewer hospitalizations and deaths compared to previous surges as Omicron is believed to be milder
  • Daily deaths were predicted to peak at about 2,800 in mid-February
  • Confirmed Omicron cases have increased by 19 percent day-over-day, up to 1,781 as of Wednesday morning as COVID spreads before the holidays

Despite the surge, experts believe the new infections will ultimately lead to fewer deaths and hospitalizations than the deadly Delta variant, as Omicron is believed to be a more infectious but less severe variant.

Lets hope that the virus don't mutate any further.

EXCLUSIVE: Walter Reed scientists expect to announce that they have developed a vaccine that protects people from COVID-19 and all its variants, even Omicron

:azn: I could only fit so much, and when people click on the link it’s there.

besides, this is a “bipartisan issue”; humanity versus the virus.

Nonsense, as at least half of Americans are already naturally immune and so highly unlikely to be reinfected anytime soon.

Data from both UK and S Africa shows around a 80% reduction in hospitalisations and of those hospitalised 30% less likely to end up in ICU.

This variant is just a cold in its lethality to the population and the old, sick and fat as always will suffer the brunt of it.

It’s not just about mortality, it’s about prevent this thing from mutating further. This new variant is highly contagious, causing more break through cases amongst already vaccinated people.

What if a variant emerges that is also highly deadly. We can’t keep going through for more years. Our economies, our healthcare systems, and our psyches are stretched as it is.

What if you get struck by lightning on your way to the shop?

What if you get run over as you cross the road?

We need to stop obsessing about "What ifs" and just get on with life.

This is nothing more than a cold and the sooner everyone gets it and is naturally immune the better it will be for everyone as we can just get back to living normally again.
