BBC's Dominic Laurie: "The Sultan of Oman seems to want to buy a number of aircraft"

The government of Oman wants to buy a number of fighter jets from the UK, according to Downing Street.

Number 10 said at this stage it was unable to confirm the number of Eurofighter planes - known in the UK as Typhoons - being bought.

The prime minister's spokesman said the sale will help secure British jobs and "further enhance the strong strategic relationship between the UK and Oman".

The aircraft are partly being built by BAE systems.

The company, which makes the aircraft with European partners, said: "Oman is a country with which we have a long and valued relationship and we stand ready and willing to support any requirement it has."

Meanwhile, shadow defence minister Gerald Howarth said if a contract was signed, it would "demonstrate that the Typhoon is one of the leading swing role combat aircraft in the world".

"It is a tribute to Britain's defence industry, which we are keen to support," he added.

Typhoon planes are being built jointly by the governments of the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain.

The aircraft is already in service and the UK is committed to taking 232 of the 600 plus aircraft, which is the largest individual order.

Hi,
I don't understand one thing that why are they all interested to buy EF from UK why not Germany or other participants, Saudi's bought their EF from Britain as well, don't Germany, Italy & Spain have the rights to sell EF?

The Typhoons will be taken from UK production slots, the aircraft will still be made as per usual, parts made in UK, Germany, Spain and Italy, and as the aircraft are to come from UK proudction slots final assembly will be in the UK.

RAF orders will then be added to the end of the batch production so that the UK maintains the same number of combat jets. (so the UK isn't selling her own jets but the production slots, much the same as the Saudi deal)

The Saudis buying UK Jets just seems to have become the way it is, RSAF operated Lightnings and later Tornados, now Typhoons and Hawks.

Austrian Typhoons were German units for the record.

Why dont they buy 100-150 Thunders for that Price ???

There is a difference between the two planes.

Typhoons are the best 4.5++ gen plane today. Thunder is not even 4th gen right now.

No competition mate. I would choose a Typhoon over Su30 anyday, Thunder is not even in the league.

I don't think a Thunder can take down a Typhoon. Even 4 Thunders vs 1 Typhoon would be tough for Thunder.

actually oman is having very deep relations with uk from long time..and let me tell u one thing else////////their sutan will never ever go for pakistan.........but typhoon is cool one

Oman indicated that it intends to buy an unspecified number of Eurofighter warplanes, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's spokesman said on Friday.

The possible deal followed three years of talks between Brown and the leaders of Oman, the spokesman said without giving details of the size or timing of any sale.

Media reports in late 2008 said Oman was in talks with BAE Systems to buy 24 Typhoons worth at least 1.4 billion pounds ($2.13 billion).

The British company makes the Eurofighter alongside Italian group Finmeccanica and European aerospace group EADS. The engines are supplied by a group led by Rolls-Royce and Germany's MTU Aero Engines.

If confirmed, the deal would give a boost to the Eurofighter project after years of uncertainty over whether European countries would agree to buy the full number of jets they signed up for.

Saudi Arabia bought 72 Eurofighter Typhoons in 2006 and India is considering buying the aircraft for its $11 billion fighter jet contract.

Careless as always:rofl:

Why you say 4:1 & why didn't you take into account the # of AMRAMMs avalanche from these 4 thunders upon 1 Typhoon

PS: Take into account the no. of hardpoints

Sultan love toys. Typhoon good toy for him. But little kids keep away.
