DoE serves notice on Indian ship

Sygma Shipping Line, the parent company of Indian flag carrier Ocean Pearl, has been served with a notice to answer by December 28 why the company would not be prosecuted for causing oil spill in the Bay.

The Department of Environment (DoE) served the notice on the basis of a probe into the oil spill off the coastline of Sitakunda after The Daily Star on Wednesday reported that pilots and passengers of Bangladesh Biman and Regent Airways saw an oil slick in the Bay.

“We have served the notice as a routine procedure to prosecute the polluter under the environment conservation act,” said DoE Director Zafar Alam in Chittagong.

The Ocean Pearl, that has remained grounded for more than two months, caused the spill in the Bay during an unauthorised transfer of 400 tonnes of furnace oil and diesel, said a DoE official wishing anonymity.

The captain of the ship defied the maritime and environmental laws that make it mandatory for any ship to seek permission from the Customs and Excise to sell or discard oil.

Customs officials said the ship did not take any permission from them. They suspected that the entire stock of furnace oil and diesel was dumped into the sea to salvage the ship.

The news report has some factual errors- the ship is not Indian Flag. The POR is Basse Terre. Which is not anywhere in India.
Apart from that, maritime pollution is a very serious issue indeed.

Indeed .. this news specifically targeted to Indian bashers.. that ship is neither Indian nor controlled by any Indian co.

I am so tired of ppl who so obsessed with BSF.

One Pakistani member compared BSF with CHinese naval task force and here above, comparing BSF with Coast guard and navy.

This is so ridiculous. Do you guys even know any damn thing about BSF.

Its a paramilitary force with no naval wing. Go and google about it to know more.

And yes, give me one example where BSF has blown up any of your country's entities out of the water as you claim in ur post ?

The report clearly states that ship is grounded in Bangladeshi waters
ie: Ship has hit an underwater rock or bottom and hence can not move. Besides the pic clearly shows ..ship is severely hogging in the midship area..which means it is grounded at midship.

Maritime law clearly states..when a ship is in distress(grounded, sinking etc)..it may discharge its cargo or stores(fuel oil, diesel oil, lub oil etc) to the sea in order to save lifes or the ship itself.

Who is going to blow it? How can you expect this type of bravery from bunch of coward and bone sucker? :hitwall:

:rofl::rofl::rofl:
Now this comment really takes the cake..ok what happens when ship is blown out water?..its tanks get ruptured, all the oil it is carrying spill out to sea and the ship can not sink as it is already in shallow water(as it has grounded) and therby you have permanent wreck sitting in your waters oozing oil.

According to maritme law sinking of flag bearing vessel by another country is declaration of war on the flag state..go ahead declare war on India.

India, the Constant Headache for All It's Neighbors.

Any ship registered in India(under Indian flag state)..does not make it an Indian ship(ie owned by Indian company or manned by Indian crew.)

Largest no of merchant ships are registered under Panamanian flag state..that does not mean a country Panama owns largest merchant shipping fleet i the world..they register there because it is cheaper to run the ship under Panamanian flag(as Panamanian flag state rules are very lax wrt to saftey standards and Panamanian flag state does not charge much money to run ship under there flag.)
