Oil for Jets? China Could Win Iran's Largest Oil Field in $1Bln Arms Deal.

J-10 b just entered service with the Chinese air force, so it may be this fighter go to Iran.

BTW this plane powered by Chinese engine and aesa radar.

It's the Chinese proud fighter as the rest are Russians versions.

Yes, J-11 derived from Su-27, although China has totally mastered it and upgraded it to the extreme with the domestic AESA radar and turbofan engine.

But J-10 is fully designed by China itself, it will be the future J-20 and J-31.

Yes, I hope we can pay the debt immediately, since we don't want to owe anyone's money.

BTW, if they are now negotiating about the arm deal, then it does mean that Iran wants something else instead of the cash payment.

Anyway, China is always willing to pay immediately.

For 5 years, any arms we buy requires UNSC approval, after that, limitation is lifted. So for now, western members of UNSC can effectively sabotage any arms deal between Iran and China.

Iran's air force is aging now, I think the only things we need for now are Su-34, Su-35, PAK FA or J-31 (though it's yet to be tested and proved) and even J-20 (if China is willing to sell it). Anything except those options is not going to help our air force much.

Why does Iran need the Df-21 when it already has anti ship ballistic missiles, even long range ones?

Iran only requires TOT and purchases for fighter jets. In that regards, Our Chinese friends can greatly help.

China's Aegis destroyer and nuclear sub/AIP sub should have stirred Iran's interest as well.

I don't see any reason why Iran cannot join a joint project with China for 5th gen fighter jet project like how the Indians did with the Russians.

The J-31 project requires Iran to join, since Pakistan has already decided to put more investment on it.

I have always felt that Iran is heavily in need of some allies and at times the foreign policy of said country is a little erratic. Having China as a friend is good as the case of Pakistan proves. The Chinese think about profits and as questions later in fact they are reliable allies who do not have any demands unlike America while they keep their nose out of other countries affairs. They have also released heavy development funding in African states.

Iran should play its cards right and make allies. These years of sanctions could very easily have been avoided if Iran had made friends. Even north korea is a good friend at this stage as it can bring them closer to china. When North Korea however approached the Iranians Iran said Korea has still not paid its debts to Iran. That was undiplomatic and unnecessary. I have been studying Iran closely and am fascinated by its Pro-Muslim policies though even these are at times laced with shia-ishness.

I hope Pakistan and Iranian ties develop too. Anyway this is my analysis.

Maybe India can do the same to Iran as well.

Or even in other fields like space.

. . .
If Pakistan was not a factor, India and China could have defense deal too...

Well said.

A lot of news about immediate change for Iranian trade are not correct.

It will take few years (or more) before things are back to normal.

I'll say it like this: I'd rather have Iran get most of that money 'repaid' by infrastructure projects and products/military equipment, than payment of a lump sum of money (god knows what happens with that). Sadly that makes Iran the same as Africa: in order to prevent corruption, don't pay cash, build/make things and invest.

For the government, cash is more flexible and preferred...
goods/investment are too slow...

I think Russia, China and US will not sell their top stealth fighter to other countries..
The available stealth fighter in market will be F35 and J31...
US is not likely to sell F35 to Iran in short time. J31 is still in development and may take many years.
Non-stealth fighter like SU35 will be a good choice. big, long range and powerful enough
J10 is more likely a defensing fighter that cost less but can effectively replace Iran`s old fighter and protect the air,
But J10 lacks capacity of attacking and very long range..

The deal sounds reasonable partly.
1: China owes Iran a lot of money for oil import. These money cannot be transferred to Iran due to economy sanction.
The weapons can be used to pay the owed money.
2: Iran air force is aging and in urge need for new fighter.
J10 is a standard 3rd generation fighter than can meet Iran demand for air defense.
J10 lacks long range attack capacity which will not cause surrounding countries fear.

Problems will be:
J10 is still important part of PLA air force. China has not yet sold to the solid and most important friend Pakistan.
Unless the better fighter J20 enter service(2017-2020 possibly), China is not likely to sell J10 in short time.
For Iran, J10 is a low cost air defense fighter.
If Iran want aggressive air force and is willing to pay more, Su 30/Su35 can bring more attacking power.

So this deal will not come to reality in short time.
In long term it may be possible, but many uncertain..

What do our Chinese friends think of this? And don't 20 year rights to the single biggest Iranian oilfield sound a bit much for 24 jets? Also, is the j-10 still produced? I read somewhere it's not produced anymore. Thanks.

we won't selling top military hardware to even our closest ally, not because we don't trust them, because US espionage are everywhere, their agents are embedded in every corner of the planet, people have no idea just how much they control the world..
as a matter of fact, china have never being keen on exporting arms, and chinese arms exports are not profits driven, but strategically motivated.

Call me a skeptic, but I'm fairly convinced that a decent number of 4.5th generation fighters (i.e. J-10B, Eurofighter, Rafale, Su-35) would do the IRIAF far more of a favor than would a miniscule quantity of 5th generation aircraft.
