Washington, June 12 (IANS) Warning that the Chinese and the Indians were coming hard at the US in an increasingly competitive world, President Barack Obama has called for an improvement of the American education system to help US regain its pre-eminence.

'So even with the good schools, we've got to pick up the pace, because the world has gotten competitive,' he said in reply to a question from a teacher at a town hall-style meeting in a high school gymnasium in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Thursday.

'The Chinese, the Indians, they're coming at us and they're coming at us hard, and they're hungry, and they're really buckling down,' Obama said.
'And they watch - their kids watch a lot less TV than our kids do, play a lot fewer video games, they're in the classroom a lot longer.'
'So here's the bottom line. We've got to improve, we've got to step up our game,' the president told the teacher who questioned his lament that the American education system was broken.

While the average public school is actually doing a reasonably good job ...' we are falling behind when it comes to math; our kids are falling behind when it comes to science,' Obama said.

The US had 'kind of settled into mediocrity when we compare ourselves to other advanced countries and wealthy countries,' he said. 'That's a problem because the reason that America over the last hundred years has consistently been the wealthiest nation is because we've also been the most educated nation.'

'It used to be by a pretty sizable factor we had the highest high school graduation rates, we had the highest college graduation rates, we had the highest number of Ph.D.s, the highest number of engineers and scientists,' Obama said.

'We used to be head and shoulders above other countries when it came to education. We aren't anymore. We're sort of in the middle of the pack now among wealthy, advanced, industrialised countries,' he said.

Obama also reiterated his call for a government-run insurance option as part of his a plan to remake the nation's health care system, saying that a public plan will provide the competition needed to keep private insurance companies 'honest and keep prices down.'

It is surely going to be a great move by Obama to review the existing educational system and immigration policies, including releasing green card, work visa to foreigners etc. I knew, one day Americans would realize where they have been going wrong. I wish all the best for the American budding generation.

And I don't see where they have been going wrong for last 100 years. They have been the most educated & wealthiest nation. Since the time of Clinton US has partially sold out a great amount of US jobs and citizenship permits and US has been prospering at the cost of those people, apart from other factors, like petroleum and weapons. But now the time has changed, the policy which was good decades back, is not necessarily relevant today. Yes, the thread is concerned with domestic education, but I was talking about also the visa policy and the current Baffalo in place of Bangalore move.

So they decided to go global, not realizing that if they ask other countries to open their markets America will also have to open its market for those countries. This caused American Market flooded with imported of Similar quality at lesser price . So American companies had to device ways to reduce the costs and to be competitive. They did the only thing they could do. Move their facilities to low cost countries. This gave birth to BPO's and Low cost manufacturing companies in India and China. These companies imported cheap labor from cheap economies and made profit from low cost.

Suddnly Americans realized they are getting beaten at the game they thought they mastered" Globalization" Guess they overlooked global competition.

When the business was under pressure in the new millenium, Americans started transferring these jobs to India. This was not greed, but rather needed to be done in order to survive.

New communications technology has been a very important factor in all of this. Perhaps it would not have been so easy to do all this before, but now it is.

I beg to differ...and may be I am wrong...

I believe American companies needed new markets to expand and grow and they asked American Government to help them. They became innovative and invented Globalization.. So they approached other countries to open their markets so that they can sell their products in those countries.

Other countries demanded access to American markets as a return favor. So that was given by American government ...

Once that Happened American Market was flooded with Cheaper imported products .

So American Companies Started losing market share because they could not manufacture goods and offer services at the cost offered by foreign companies because American labor was expensive ....

This forced American companies to move into low cost countries so that they can compete..........this started Outsourcing.....of all kinds.....


Low cost countries provided cheap and effective resources ...this improved margins of American companies......so they increased outsourcing.......to improve their bottom lines.....thus increasing Profits....which go in American businessmen's pockets......
