Obama accepts invitation to visit Pakistan: Qureshi
Updated at: 0400 PST, Monday, April 12, 2010

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has accepted invitation to visit Pakistan, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told media after the meeting between Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and US President on Sunday and termed the meeting 'positive'.

Both the leaders agreed to take the strategic dialogue further, he added.

US President Barack Obama on Sunday held talks with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.

US president, accompanied by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, strode across Pennsylvania Avenue to Blair House to hold talks with Prime Minister Gilani on the eve of a 47-nation summit on improving nuclear security.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Ambassador Hussian Haqqani were also present during the meeting.

Good for pakistan. Will he stop at India? or exclusive pakistan visit?

No one knows if he is coming for sure or not. But it might be safe to assume that he has a trip due in Pakistan for the fact that he cannot simply give away billions in aid and not come and see for himself where the money is going. Maybe a trip to the front line in the North West will highlight what Pakistan exactly needs.

Not sure if he goes to India, even if he does, it would be so as not to anger Indians, though the trip to India is not as urgently required. Remember his t rip to China, but he skipped India and made up for it by inviting India to the state dinner?

Very encouraging development for Pakistan. Let us hope that this brings them a lot more closer. It will be good if he takes parts in media interactions such as the one that Hillary Clinton was part of. That will bring their opinions closer to those in Pakistan. It will be very good to see Pakistan as the focus of international diplomacy.

Ref the comments about visiting India. I think that he should not visit India in the same trip. If there is a visit planned separately it is better. They need to focus on Pakistan independently and delineate our two countries because each needs separate motivations to be parts of alliances.

Also there is nothing pressing currently between India and U.S. And the head of states have anyway met thrice over the past 12 months so that should actually be enough I guess to keep the mutually beneficial relationship going. Too much focus on India - US relationship is needless for India specially when we need to maintain a balance in our international relationships.

Obama will visit India first and that will be exclusive visit. As for the visit of Pakistan nothing is fantasized, so wait for details.

There is nothing to be angry about if Obama comes to india... He will at the max sign 3-5 business and defence deals with india.. nothing else... In some way or other those deals will help us to grow further.. He wont be coming with a magic wand.. so dont expect too much..
