ISLAMABAD: The Medical Devices Development Centre (MDDC) headed by Dr Murtaza Najabat Ali at NUST School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering took a step for the production of cardiac stents.

MDDC is being funded by Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) for the production of cardiac stents and angioplasty balloon catheters. Now NUST - MDDC can produce both types of the cardiac stents including bare-metal and drug-eluted stents.

In addition to all this NUST – MDDC also endeavoring to create industry - academic linkage in the medical device field, which unfortunately has been non-existent in Pakistan.

At NUST - MDDC we intend to do a lot more things like serial production and commercialization of both products to meet requirement of cost effective and affordable angioplasty kits for the general public at affordable rates. Approximately 450 units of the indigenously developed savior (bare-metal) stents have been successfully implanted in patients till date at Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) and Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) at almost one sixth the price of imported stents available in the market.

In Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Department at NUST – SMME, we have elaborate labs and a pool of striving researchers. We need to harness this resource to develop new devices, medical implants and most importantly the industrial systems, which we have to import at exorbitant cost.

Nice, stents have been around for 4.5 decades.... finally.
But each stent cost 3-4 lac while production cost is only couple of dollars
Same is true for ventilators cosy is 5 lac but production cost is less than 1000rs its true for all medical.equipment and thus poorest state of our health h system.initiative has to be taken to fix this problem

Yeah that's why you pay 40% taxation
We cant afford such a system of taxation at this moment

A good tax system goes a long way to improve the country.... Pak had 7 decades and still hasn't got a good tax system, this is a huge failure.

Sir i am in 27% tax category in the capacity of individual ... this is not a small rate for not a wealthy person like me ... the issue is tax theft and miss use of resources otherwise tax income is more than enough ...

Good news.

It is disgusting to hear that a few Pakistanis go to India for special medical treatment (Like for liver transplant).

U and other ppl are squeezed extra hard bcuz the elites avoid paying their taxes. In its current state Pakistan needs to have a tiered tax bracket system and really come down hard on tax evasion.

Thanks for tagging. This is really heartening to know. I hope it goes into production by the local industry and helps the patients at a fraction of the cost of the imported ones.

This is very important. Universities / research institutions should have a strong liaison with the industry.

It's a great news hope this will cut the cost for people who can't afford it NUST is full of talent!
:agree::agree::agree::agree::cheers:World class talent at that.Kudos

The fact that it's hasn't come down hard on its tax evasion problem, shows a massive failure by Pakistan.... Man, this country needs so many reforms and amendments to the Constitution. Western countries have the best human rights record in their countries, Islamic countries the worst. Same with tax system.
