Nusrat loses battle for life

.
I do not believe in death penalty and so cannot wish for someone to be executed.

If he gets convicted then he will most probably be hanged as BD has the death penalty.

The death penalty exists for certain crimes in our religon bro, for stuff like rape, murder etc... It is the right decision for many crimes.

. .
Made him impotent by castrating and locked them in special prisons, but for murder case, death penalty should be taken into consideration as it was high profile case

Update: so finally justice served! Now be at peace our dear sister Nusrat, the brave daughter of mother Bangladesh!

A court in southern Bangladesh has sentenced 16 people to death over the murder of a student who was set on fire after she accused a teacher at an Islamic school of sexual harassment.

The ruling by a special women and children's tribunal on Monday came six months after 19-year-old Nusrat Jahan Rafi's murder.

The young woman had died of burn wounds in April after she was doused in kerosene and set alight for refusing to withdraw a sexual harassment complaint against the principal of a school where she was a student.

Hafez Ahmed, lead prosecutor in the case, welcomed Monday's verdict, saying it proved no one could get away with murder in Bangladesh.

"It's an achievement for the judiciary," he said.

Mahmudul Hasan Noman, Rafi's brother, said he was "happy" to see justice served in his sister's killing.

"They all took part in the murder. Now they have to face the consequences," he said.

Siraj Ud Doula, head teacher at the Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa, was among the 16 sentenced to death. He denied involvement in the killing, but 12 of the suspects had confessed to the crime, according to prosecutors.

Doula's lawyer, Mahfuzul Haque, said he would appeal the ruling.

"I believe the evidence against my client was not properly scrutinised," he said.

Speaking a day before the verdict, Rafi's father AKM Musa Manik said he hoped to get justice.

"The whole country had seen what happened to my daughter. She was an innocent girl and was brutally murdered for her strong stance against a wrongdoing."

Rafi's killing sparked protests across Bangladesh, prompting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to promise speedy action in the case.

Rafi filed a complaint against Doula in March, saying he had called her into his office and touched her inappropriately. The petition led to the teacher's arrest.

Doula ordered Rafi's murder from prison, according to the police. His accomplices included two politicians with the ruling Awami League Party and several students at the Islamic school.

On the day of the attack, Rafi was lured to the roof of the school, where five others bound her hands and feet with a scarf and set her ablaze, the police said. The killers had planned to pass off the murder as a suicide, but Rafi managed to run downstairs after the flames burned through the scarf binding her limbs.

In the ambulance, Rafi identified some of her attackers in a video statement and said: "The teacher touched me. I will fight this crime till my last breath."

She suffered burns to 80 percent of her body and died in hospital five days later.

Maleka Banu, general secretary of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, called Monday's ruling a "landmark verdict".

"It's not just about murder; the reason because of which Nusrat was killed shocked the whole country. She wanted to get justice for her sexual harassment, instead of getting that, she was killed brutally ... A verdict like this is necessary to let people know that you can't get away with sexual harassment."

Human Rights Watch welcomed the prosecution of the suspects but said it did not support the death penalty against the suspects.

"The brutality with which this young woman was murdered to silence her for daring to complain of sexual abuse had outraged many Bangladeshis. Human Rights Watch does not support the capital punishment because of its inherent cruelty, but we welcome the fact that the authorities prosecuted the perpetrators," said Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director at the human rights group.

Nusrat Jahan Rafi, the girl who has been killed allegedly in reprisal for charging the principal of her madrasa in Feni with sexual abuse, had described in an exercise book how “she had been molested”.

Police have kept the exercise book as evidence in a case started over an arson attack that eventually led to her death on Wednesday night.

Nusrat had also lamented some of her peers’ support for the principal and main suspect, SM Siraj-ud-Daula, in two pages of the exercise book.

Addressing her classmates, she asked: “How do you demand Siraj-ud-Daula’s freedom even after knowing everything about him? Don’t you know what happened on that day in the class – on what parts of my body he placed his hand and what other parts he wanted to touch?”

“He told me not to hide my feelings. ‘Don’t you feel good when you romance boys? What can they give you?’ he asked me and said he would give me question papers during exams,” she wrote.

Sonagazi Model Police Station Inspector Kamal Hosain told bdnews24.com they found the writing on a page of an exercise book of Nusrat on Tuesday.

A similar writing was found on another page of the exercise book, he said.

“It will come in handy in the case initiated by Nusrat’s brother. Police will check the credibility of the writings. We will question those named here,” the inspector added.

Describing the arson attack to police, Nusrat had said some people tricked her onto the roof of the Sonagazi Islamia Fazil Madrasa and set fire to her by pouring kerosene on her body when she went to the institution to sit Alim exams, equivalent to HSC, last Saturday.

The assailants, who included burqa-clad women, carried out the attack when she had refused to withdraw the charges against Siraj, Nusrat said.

Siraj had already been in jail in a case initiated by Nustrat’s mother over alleged sexual harassment.

Police have arrested 10 people, including Siraj, in the case over the attack.

Deeply saddened. Finally, justice has been served.

The assailants, who included burqa-clad women, carried out the attack when she had refused to withdraw the charges against Siraj, Nusrat said.

Burqa-clad ?? Then they can do no evil, for they are clad in the burqa - the holiest of holy clothing.

. .
What is their reasoning for such a heinous act?
Because this principal is a bastard womanizer. He harass girl students and keep them silent. Also uneducated folks don't believe the girls because they believe that mullahs can't do wrong.

So the girls remain silent. But Nusrat was different case, she did not remain silent and fought back. So the bastard mullah and his fellows murdered her in order to keep her mouth shut.

Good, these mullas deserve this

. . . .
Absolutely fantastic news. As long as the accused are genuinely guilty, hang every single one of them. No pardon of the death sentence.
