What's new

Number of foreign students in US hits record high

This. This so many times.

Desis place a negative stigma on blue collar workers.

When in fact they are:
a) more prosperous in the West
and b) I have found electricians here to be better than many electrical engineering grads that come to Australia.

That is because there is no substitute for practical experience. I was shocked to find out that a good railway track welder in England/Scotland region makes 45-55k GBP per year, that is London Investment Banking level compensation. But look at the job he does: Heavy welding, moving heavy objects come rain or snow.

A skilled engineer who works in design and development will be very well off too, however there are few of them in any organization.

Every time we here, so and so company is laying off workers. But those workers are junior engineers, senior engineers, marketing team, assistants etc. They never lay off the chief engineer. Because with him gone, you don't have anything to sell.
You don't kill the goose that gives you the golden egg.

.
Again, both are good.
Depends on universities that you are applying to and the offers you get. I'll be more than happy to help then.

In UK there are 20 or so major universities that get majority of the research funding. They are called the Russell Group. If you can get into any of them, it is good. Otherwise don't go. In America, there are host of private universities and some public unis. So it all depends.

US is much bigger and as such the economic opportunities are in abundance in all sectors : Engineering, Law, Medicine, Finance. UK is more like services, they don't make anything anymore, so engineering has taken a hit.

If you are going abroad and spending that $$$, make sure it is a top ranked uni. Otherwise study in India (for bachelors and go for masters abroad)

BTW, Germany/Switzerland have some excellent unis as well, and they have very low tuition rates.

If you are extremely rich and would run your daddy's business upon return, then you can go wherever you want, party hard and enjoy all that west has to offer :P

thank you.

Which investment banker works 14 hour days for ~100k AUD? On a per hour basis, those welders are making far more.

Yes they, that is what i meant. And i hate investment banking/finance for that reason. You get the $$$, but no time to enjoy it.

What is your MS going to be in, and demand for skillful, creative programmers will ALWAYS be there. If you are an average programmer, then don't expect much.

There is demand for specialist skills and it depends on ultimately how good you are.
There is always massive demand for good doctors, because people will always have health issues.
Ever heard of an 'unemployed' Plumber/Mechanic/Electrician/Welder etc?

A skillful welder/driller in oil industry makes more than an Engineering graduate.

planning to do my ms in cs

.
Not really. Trust me when i say this. Pick a specialized field in IT..say for eg Business side of Capital Markets, with IT(Development ) the supply here is at least 40 Percent less than the demand...I dont have links to prove it though..I am only going by what I do for a living....and yes the demand is way too high in comparison to supply...I am sure its the same with Health sciences as well.

bhai , hw about specialisation in software development or artificial intelligence ?? does univs offer specialization in Business side of Capital Markets, with IT(Development ) , if so can u gve me lnks of those univs ?

With money comes girls. It is natural. Trust me.
The day you are a successful, high earning person, all of a sudden random girls will start falling in love with you.

Artificial Intelligence is also a very good field to get into. My advice is if you are interested in Capital Markets you need to first have a strong Mathematics background for eg>...Quantitative models implementations for computation/valuation, Greeks (Delta/Gamma/Vega/Theta/Rho), Default to Zero (DTZ), CDS (Credit Default Swap) Spread01, Recovery Rate01, Bucketed VaR (Value at Risk), Stress on Bucketed Shifts implementations for Market Risk ...!

It's a good way to make money for the U.S. and a good way to earn prestigious degrees for those rich enough to afford it.

Now if you are planning to study and get back to India....Then I advice that MS in Mechanical engineering is the way to go....Manufacturing is going to Boom in India....and India will be the place to be for manufacturing and Engineering professionals.

To answer your question in regards to Financial Aid....That is something I have no clue about.
The best person to answer your question is to get in touch with an international student adviser to help you out on the process and also advice on what pre-requisites you need in order to pursue your dream....Sorry I wish I could be off more help.
