Nukes could fall into hands of Taliban if democracy fails
The Hindu Business Line : "Nukes could fall into hands of Taliban if democracy fails"

LONDON: Pakistan's President, Mr Asif Ali Zardari has said there is a possibility that its nuclear arsenal could fall into the hands of Taliban if democracy ‘fails’ in his country and the world doesn't help.

“If democracy in this country fails, if the world doesn't help democracy - then any eventuality is a possibility,” he said in an interview to German newspaper 'Der Spiegel' when asked whether he like his late wife Benazir Bhutto feared that Pakistan's nu clear weapons could fall into the hands of Islamist extremists.

“But as long as democracy is there, there is no question of that situation arising. All important installations and weaponry are always under extra security,” Mr Zardari said.

“Nuclear weapons are not Kalashnikovs - the technology is complicated, so it is not as if one little Taliban could come down and press a button,” he said.

“I want to assure the world that the nuclear capability of Pakistan is in safe hands,” he said, referring to growing concerns in the West over safety of Pakistan's nuclear weapons. - PTI

Here I break a personal agreement not to post.

This is utter political miss standing and soap boxing if ever there was. Only a political naivety would make such public comments.

For this to occur, failing requires two fundamental things

1. The political parties have fed themselves so stupid on greed that they fall into a bickering shambles. End of democrazy.

2. The Army is so enthralled by Talibanism that they capitulate. This would be in many ways against the Islamic fundamentals instilled and still lingering in ISI and the Army that gen Zia instigated. The Army is not a fool. Also just remember the retribution that the Taliban would take out on the army for the current fighting. End of Army

No Way!

There are idiots and there are HUGE IDIOTS. Take your pick, even 10% of it..

Now I leave.

Let the normal ranting and ravings :blah: start again.

The Nukes are not about to fall into Taiban hands if the democratic government collapses, but Zardari as president is trying to bolster economic support for his government in dealing with the fallout of the insurgency and the military operations targeting it.

The Arabs have so far failed to offer anything substantive in terms of assistance, despite the much ballyhooed relationship with them, which leaves the West, and specifically the US.

If we are to go by the conventional wisdom that the US legislators will vote based on how they and their constituents view the threat to US interests, then establishing a case for US support for Pakistan being in US interests is important, and fear works better than most arguments on the layman.

This excerpt from a Financial Times piece perhaps illustrates why Zardari is resorting to such rhetoric.

Even assuming what seems like probable military victory in Swat, there are reasons to doubt the government’s ability to exterminate militancy nationwide. Maleeha Lodhi, former ambassador to Washington and London, says circumstances in Swat will be hard to replicate.“I’d like to believe that this is something that will hold,” she says. “But we should not equate this with sustained support for counter-insurgency.”

She and others identify three main threats to the current national resolve. First, Pakistan must deal swiftly with the 2.5m people said to have been driven from their homeland by the fighting. As many as nine in 10 displaced people are being housed by friends and family outside Swat. But that still leaves at least 200,000 in makeshift camps, struggling with the intense heat of pre-monsoon summer.

For the time being, the public appears to have accepted such suffering as necessary. But Mr Zardari acknowledges that goodwill may evaporate if displaced people start dying in large numbers or if they cannot quickly and smoothly be resettled. That could stretch Pakistan’s already woeful finances by another $2bn, experts estimate. “If the displaced people are dissatisfied, they can easily become prey to the propaganda of the militants,” he says, urging the world to step up aid. “The militants will gain more strength if the issue is not addressed urgently and effectively.”
FT.com / Asia-Pacific / Pakistan - Zardari?s new zeal

A lot is resting on Pakistan successfully, first, reducing the militant threat in Malakand militarily, and second, rehabilitating the refugees and assisting in reconstruction - including future expansions into territory controlled by the militants, without which any respite we gain in Swat or elsewhere will be temporary.
