The National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) is planning a major revamp of its cyber technology to deal with the growing threat of cyber terror. The formal proposal is likely to be discussed by the Cabinet committee on Security soon. The NTRO deals with all issues related to technical surveillance and intelligence gathering and then coordinates will leading central and state security and intelligence agencies for sharing information and data for further action.
Top intelligence sources said amid reports that terror outfits like the ISIS and Al Qaeda were now targeting India youth, particularly the educated ones, through the increasing use of social media the NTRO has decided to upgrade and enhance its capacity manifolds particularly to deal with cyber threat. This would include insta-lling state-of-the-art hardware as well as latest software at the NTRO Delhi-based headquarters and some of its zonal facilities.
Sources claimed that NTRO experts had received valuable inputs’’ from their counterparts in the US on the latest surveillance equipment for the cyberspace that will help the Indian agencies to ensure that terror outfits are not able to misuse the Internet for either recruiting, influencing or spreading hate messages of videos in the country.
We are trying to put in place a mechanism so that any posts that compromise the national security will either be blocked or get eliminated within few minutes of being posted of the social media or ev-en messages on chat roo-ms and emails. Once this is done, we will be able to deal with the increasing terror threat from the cyberspace to a large extent,’’ a senior official said.
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will soon take this ambitious proposal and it is expected to be cleared after a detailed discussion. ``The new computer system will also help the NTRO, which will coordinate with various state police, to check cases of financial frauds and crimes. With increasing use of Internet for financial activities and e-commerce there has been a sharp rise in cases of financial frauds,’’ the official added.
Once the proposal is formally cleared a core team of NTRO sleuths will be sent to the US for enhanced training in use of the new equipment most of which is expected to be sources from America and some European countries.
