ISLAMABAD: Pakistan army chief spokesman Maj-Gen Asif Ghafoor says a meeting of National Security Committee has been suggested to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to discuss recent “misleading statement regarding Mumbai incident.”

In a Twitter statement on Sunday, DG ISPR Asif Ghafoor said that the meeting would be held on Monday.

The statement comes in the backdrop of remarks made by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif about the Mumbai terrorist attacks in an interview to a local English daily on Saturday.

In a formal statement on Sunday evening, PML-N said that Nawaz Sharif’s statement was misinterpreted by Indian media.

“PMLN would like to set the record straight on the interview of PML-N Quaid carried yesterday by DAWN. At the outset, statement of the Quaid has been grossly misinterpreted by the Indian media. Unfortunately, a section of Pakistani electronic & social media has intentionally or unintentionally not only validated but has lent credence to the malicious propaganda of Indian media without going through the full facts of the statement," the party said.

The PML-N as the country’s premier popular national political party and its Quaid need no certificate from anybody on their commitment and capacity to preserve, protect and promote Pakistan’s national security.

After all, it was Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who, resisting all pressures, took the most important and most difficult decision on national security in Pakistan’s history by making the country a nuclear power in May 1998.

Additionally, comments of PML-N Quaid about Mian Shahbaz Sharif’s role in the Party’s election campaign are also being misinterpreted. Mian Shahbaz Sharif is the elected President of PML-N, and, in this capacity, he is already in the forefront of the election campaign, taking the PML-N message to every nook and corner of the country. There is, therefore, no ambiguity regarding his role and future responsibilities."

Opposition parties PPP, PTI, PML-Q, Pak Sarzameen Party have strongly condemned Nawaz Sharif’s remarks.

Imran Khan, in a Twitter statement, said Nawaz Sharif is the modern-day Mir Jafar, who collaborated with the British to enslave his nation for personal gains.

He said that Nawaz was speaking Modi's language against Pakistani State simply to protect his ill-gotten Rs 300 billions stashed in his sons companies abroad.

In a press conference, PPP leader Senator Sherry Rehman said that Nawaz Sharif had endorsed Narendra Modi’s narrative in his interview.

She called for the ousted prime minister to withdraw his remarks and issue a clarification.

Raza Haroon, a leader of Pak Sarzameen Party, said that Nawaz Sharif's irresponsible statement was tantamount to enmity with the country.

PML-Q leader Pervaiz Elahi also condemned Nawaz Sharif for his interview.

Nawaz, in a recent interview to Dawn newspaper, had said, “Militant organisations are active. Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai? Explain it to me. Why can’t we complete the trial?”

His remarks were played up by the Indian media as an admission of Pakistan's involvement in the terrorist attacks, even though similar questions and statements have been raised from civilian and security officials in Pakistan earlier.

Nawaz's remarks back Modi's stance: Sherry Rehman

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sherry Rehman on Sunday slammed Nawaz Sharif for his statement on the Mumbai attacks and said it backed Modi's stance.

She said that the former prime minister’s statement compromised Pakistan’s narrative in the war against terrorism and demanded that he retract his remarks. "PPP rejects Nawaz Sharif's statement and stance [on Mumbai attacks]. Is he [Nawaz] an analyst that he's giving out such statements?" she questioned.

Rehman, also the leader of the opposition in the Senate, said questions were being raised all around the world following Nawaz's remarks.

"Why didn't Nawaz also say that Pakistan tried [very] hard to cooperate with India in the Mumbai trials?" she added.

India used Mumbai attacks to malign Pakistan: Nisar

Former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, weighing on the recent wave of discussion on the 2008 Mumbai attacks, remarked earlier today that the incident was used by India to malign Pakistan.

“Pakistan was heavily criticised over the Mumbai attacks,” he shared in a statement while referring to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s remarks on the Mumbai attacks.

“India used the Mumbai attacks for its own despicable plans,” said Nisar, who has swayed away from Nawaz since his ouster last year.

He also blamed India for showing aggression and refusing to cooperate during the investigation into the case. “The lack of cooperation by India was the biggest hurdle in the investigation. India wasn’t interested in a transparent investigation,” he said

Nawaz’s remarks being twisted out of context: Shehbaz

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday said that Nawaz's interview was twisted out of context by his political opponents.

In his address at a public rally in Sindhri, the Punjab chief minister said that India is conspiring against Pakistan by using Afghan soil.

"Our mothers and sisters are being killed in Kashmir. Almighty has made Pakistan a nuclear state. If India casts an evil eye upon Pakistan then the army and people of Pakistan will give a befitting reply," he said.

A little too late I believe, but lets see what ISPR has to say on this.

An urgent meeting of National Security Committee (NSC) has been called on Monday to discuss recently made ‘misleading’ remarks by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Mumbai attacks.

Sources told Express News that matters related to the country’s internal and external security situation would also be discussed in the meeting, scheduled to be held tomorrow morning in the federal capital.

The meeting, headed by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, would also be attended by heads of all three services chiefs, DG ISI, National Security Adviser, foreign and defence minister and officials of intelligence agencies among others.
