2017 saw a record-breaking boom in skyscraper construction. Across the globe, a grand total of 144 new buildings over 200 meters (660 feet) tall were constructed including 15 "supertall buildings" at least 300 meters (980 feet) high, according to The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Nowhere is more obsessed with building skywards than China. This year, China finished an impressive 76 buildings 200 meters tall or higher. The United States comes a very distant second, only building ten skyscrapers by comparison. South Korea rounds off the top-three with a grand total of seven while its isolated neighbor to the north completed four.

North Korea's four newest skyscrapers are concentrated at the Ryomyong residential complex in Pyongyang and the highest of them stretches 270 meters. China's tallest skyscraper of 2017 is the 115 floor Ping An Finance Center in Shenzhen which is now the world's fourth-tallest building. It stands 599 meters (1,965 feet) tall with 459,525 square meters (4,946,286 square feet) of space. The Lotte World Tower in Seoul, South Korea, is the second tallest skyscraper of 2017 while Dubai's Marina 101 comes third.

wonder who will rent out these super expensive buildings .... can anyone tell me these constructions are sponsored by private entities or govt. loans.

Countries with high population densities will have to go high to accommodate more urban mass in close proximity.
China will lead this followed by India probably 2025 to 30 will be the era when china will peak and india will get started and there after if economy prospers, India will have many super high towers where as dubai and china will move to next state of art developments.

Damn. That's an insane graphic. I knew China was going all vertical fast but I didn't know that the disparity between them and the rest of the world was so exponential. Hats off!

Karachi, Pakistan does have this one skyscraper at 62+8 floors, but the height is 315 meters due to higher lower floors and the mast at the top....missing here in the list, Wikipedia had it though.

Private sectors, the government doesn't encourage super high buildings and even made some laws to curb them, but they don't help much. The office floor space rent is skyrocketing in recent yeas and they are fully occupied, I had to move my office from a top notch office building to a much affordable one in Beijing.

I agree, China will likely reach a skyscraper construction peak in about a decade but numbers will still be high. The current challenge is still trying to provide housing/offices/commercial space for the urbanisation trend. Next phase of city construction are eco-cities.

Going by cement production, more than half of the world's infrastructure construction takes places in China (60%). From having 0 km of operational HSR (>300 km/h) in 2007 to having 58% (22,000 km operational, 16,000 km under construction) of the world's HSR lines by 2017.

China also produces half of the world's steel.

There are hundreds of cities, satellite cities, and new CBD's that are being built in China, most are not making any news.

I reckon Mumbai has the highest number of skyscrapers under construction now?
