Now, Sri Lanka pulls out of SAARC Summit

Sri Lanka pulled out of the 19th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit scheduled for November in Islamabad, becoming the fifth country to do so in the eight-nation grouping. Earlier this week, India announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not be attending the summit in wake of the strained diplomatic relations with Pakistan after the attack on Uri on September 18.

Sri Lanka’s participation in the 19th SAARC Summit scheduled for November 2016 in Islamabad
Sri Lanka regrets that the prevailing environment in the region is not conducive for holding the 19th SAARC Summit in Islamabad on 9th and 10thNovember 2016.

The General Provisions of the SAARC Charter require that decisions at all levels shall be taken on the basis of unanimity, and this applies to the convening of meetings of Heads of State or Government of SAARC Member States as well.

Peace and security are essential elements for the success of meaningful regional cooperation for the benefit of the people of South Asia. As a founding member of SAARC, committed to regional cooperation, Sri Lanka hopes that the steps required to ensuring our region’s peace and security will be taken to create an environment that is conducive for the pursuit of regional cooperation.

Sri Lanka condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and stresses in this regard, the need to deal with the issue of terrorism in the region in a decisive manner.

I can think of 8 nations in the non western world who are far more powerful than Pakistan right now and 3 are Islamic nations

Just got back from Pakistan a few months ago and I can confirm the ground reality there. Thanks to CPEC, world class infrastructure & industrial projects are going on all over Pakistan that were deemed impossible only 2 years ago. Positive things are happening to Pakistan that have never ever happened before in our entire history. As far as Pakistan is concerned, the successful initiation of CPEC has ensured $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ & £££££££££££££ for us

Ground reality is that for the 1st time in human history, when an enemy nation that is at least 7× bigger than it's opponent and has the full backing of nearly all the world's most powerful nations, can't destroy it's opponent, that nation can do anything and the whole world will know about it. Read what SL said before talking like an idiot. Both me and @Gibbs have explained how much Indian media is twisting the statement and pretty much all the threads that posted misleading news were closed down

SL did NOT pull out of the summit. The statement states that the atmosphere is not right for the summit to take place

As if by atmosphere they meant the air, the sun, the temperature, the breeze, weather conditions and other natural conditions.
