HYDERABAD: With the country’s first made-in-India S-92 helicopter cabin taking shape in a record 143 days at the Aerospace and Precision Engineering SEZ in Adibatla, Ranga Reddy district, K Rosaiah, Chief Minister, Andhra Pradesh said it heralded a new chapter in the Indian aerospace sector.

“This achievement is a new milestone in high-end aerospace manufacturing in the State and a new benchmark in the history of the Indian aerospace industry,” he said unveiling the cabin here on Sunday.

The cabin was produced through a joint venture between Tata Advanced Systems Ltd., part of the $70 billion Tata Group, and US-based Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. It would be exported to Sikorsky’s facility in Connecticut for further assembly.

Sikorsky’s S-92 helicpoters are primarily used by oil and gas companies besides military for disaster recovery operations.

Speaking on the occasion, Ratan N Tata, Chairman, Tata Sons, said the proactive support extended by the State government led to the timely completion of the project. “We would look at making further investments in Andhra Pradesh and Hyderabad in particular will be the centre for all Tata Group’s aerospace and defence related activities,” said Tata.

Spread across 250 acres, the Aerospace SEZ, is attracting major investments and houses several players including Punj Lloyd, Midhani, Samuha, a consortium of component manufacturers and GMR Group. Besides, Mahindra & Mahindra is also setting up a major aerospace project with an investment of about `300 crore.

The Chief Minister also stated that due to the presence of a number of defence-related industrial establishments in and around Hyderabad such as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Bharat Dynamics Ltd and Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd., which are involved in aerospace and precision engineering, including design and development of civil and defence aircraft components, aerospace companies can avail the local potential
