NEW DELHI: India has long since stopped talking about it, but China's state-run media is still harping on about India not getting into the Nuclear Suppliers Group and therefore taking "revenge" on Beijing by being "petty" and by making its business visa policy "a pain in the butt."

Yes, "pain in the butt" are the exact words used in the Chinese state-run Global Times's latest salvo against India.

"Although news about India's latest reform on GST+ galvanized waves of optimism among business communities across China, for Chinese nationals, a business visa to India remains a pain in the butt," the article in the state-run news agency said.

The article further said that India is wielding its visa policy as a "weapon", which is "not only petty, but may even backfire severely" on its own long-term interests. And India's doing all of this because it sees China as the "culprit" that blocked its entry into the elite nuclear club, the Chinese news agency added.

India recently refused to renew the visas+ of three Chinese journalists who worked for the state-run Xinhua. Indian government intelligence sources said this was because the so called journalists were under a cloud as they were using fake names to get into sensitive areas and to talk to high-level government personnel.

Global Times said in an article at the time that the allegations were all false. In its latest article the news outlet said India was just using that as an excuse to hit back at Beijing over its non-support or India's membership to the Nuclear Suppliers Group. (NSG).

"Unlike non-work tourism visas that can be issued promptly via the e-visa system, most other types of visa must go through the tedious process. Just like the 'sensitive' journalist visa, business visas also require approval from Indian Ministry of Home Affairs on a case-by-case basis," wrote Global Times.

Visa as 'diplomatic weapon'

China opposed India's bid to join the NSG+ stating that it is not a signatory to theNuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty+ . China further said it might allow India into the NSG if Pakistan is also allowed in. Pakistan is a known proliferator, but China never mentioned that in all the back-and-forths before the NSG plenary in June.

Therefore, China's media believes India is indeed taking revenge with its visa policy towards Chinese nationals. China's Global Times cited that proof of this is that "many Indian commenters (sic) regarded these (visa) actions as crafty moves." The articles didn't quote any Indian commentators.

"New Delhi countered these were routine decisions made without particular political considerations, let alone any intention to take revenge, but a strong message had been conveyed to Beijing: New Delhi is unhappy and here is the consequence. These actions were staged as less visible confrontation, but they effectively expressed displeasure much to Beijing's discomfiture," Global Times wrote.

'India's overcautious'

In addition, China's media - which is familiar with Beijing throwing out foreign journalists from the country if they write critical articles - accused India of being "overcautious".

"As a result, procrastination is simply rampant, due to the Indian authorities' overcautious policy arrangements and huge volume of mandatory documentation," Global Times wrote.

China is notorious for its scrutiny over its own visa process. Still, when India is similarly so, China's media says its Home Ministry is "putting hurdles" in the way.

"After several rounds of talks between the commerce, home and external affairs ministries (on the visa issue), no inroad has been made so far, however. It seems that the visa reform has run into the security hurdles put up by the Home Ministry, which raised concerns over extending the visa reform to Chinese nationals," the article said.

Who asked Chinese to come to India anyways. They can stay home or go to Pakistan. I heard its pretty nice around there during this time of year and they will get visa on arrival.

hmmm painful butt, that must hurt. I heard china got good medical facilities, how about using them to reduce that pain in the butt, it will sooth you further.

Business does not run on emotions. There are real opportunities to make money in India for Chinese companies.

My thoughts exactly. If chinese companies want to make money in, they should also start supporting Indian interests else where.

China is ALWAYS support our own national interest,so is India.
Business is beneficial for both two sides, not who beg who, the Chinese companies help India to save much money to build your infrastructure, such as the electricity generators, India is impossible to develop so much electricity these years without our electricity generators, you cannot build these equipments ,the west give a high price, so India choose our equipment to save money,it is the win-win thing. If India donot like us to make money ,it is OK ,India is not our key market too considered the politics, we also are very worried to invest too much in India because of the uncontrolled risk, we can accept that loss, but India also have to pay much more money to import equipments from other countries.
Finally, "the pain in the butt"? We feel pain because of India visa policy? I think 99.99999% Chinese donot care about this.

I agree with you. It's your country your rules. Chinese business people should not be an exception to the rules. These people can go to Pakistan, Canada, anywhere else for business. Why do they need to go to India?

I get the gist of your message. I disagree with your electric generator point. Most of our power generation equipment comes from BHEL and/or few private companies in India. Lately Japan has also been pretty helpful in providing very low interest ( <= 1%) loans for us to setup public transports AND the technology as well. Point is - if you want to do business you have to stop these distracting childish statements like 'pain in butt' coming out of your media. You cann't make profit out of someone and slander them at the same time.

dear Chinese friends, you have made your bed, now lie in it

Since China is married to Pakistan

It will be unfair on part of India to let China think that India is interested in it ;)

I think its a process which should be expediated. Chinese companies are now trying to move to mitigate the rising labor cost in China. We must make use of this opportunity. Business is a must for both sides

The ball is India court.

Like Russia's Putin, China is putting India on a hold and are observing India very move.

:coffee: IMO some of the stuff India does today is not very inspiring and suggested to many that India is trying to double deal and sometimes these actions may be considered as backstabbing.

Just because both Russia and China did not want to engage in a word of wars does not means it is NOT happening.

Example:
Why assigned 100 T-72 tanks (these tanks as a so-called threat may basically nothing to China but it is the symbolic gesture that create the trouble and misunderstanding) next to China border?

What was India responding to that?

And when China retaliate by doing the same, why cry foul and called it a threat? The whole scenario is a mirror. China has not assigned its best warplane or weapons in Tibet but the way I see it, it will happen soon. Was it is done to demonstrate India's obedience to USA?

But things will changed very quickly when a new US President come to office.

India has to MAKE a choice and decide on the way forward in the relationship between China and her.

chinese firms are a poisonous bunch. Highly non-innovative.
Lol,pointless shout from a delusional loser. The barking dog cannot stop the traveller moving forward. PS:we just get about 300billion US dollar trade surplus in 1-7 months this year.

The Global Times is just one of our thousands media, you India medias say MUCH MUCH MORE bad ,childish and emotional statements to us,why you care so much.Business is two sides thing, emotional policies always a two bladed sword,it also hurt yourself, that is why we rarely do this to USA and Japan,so do they.
If we talk about national interest,You India always say we do bad things to you,but you are good people ? which country help Dalai Lama for tens of years? The tibetans in India is nothing to us,but it hurt our relationship, did your country care our interest?
It is very natural to look for loans with low interest,I am very happy to see Japan provide you money to build infrastructure, that can improve normal people living condition. As I said,India is a high risky market for foreign companies, specially for our companies. The Chinese companies need to make risk judgements very carefully.

I agree that Indian media also publishes crap about China however there is one difference. Global Times is in complete control of Chinese government and is considered 'mouthpiece of the Party' so, when it comes from likes of Global Times it is essentially voice of the Party. And yes, business is a two way street - unlike war it is not a zero sum game. Both the parties usually benefit from business but then, both China and India have a choice of business partners and if irked will walk away from the deals.

Lastly, being 'good people' is not exactly what you seek in the business partners, isn't it? Cutting good deals is what is important in business. If China would have cut a good deal instead of being confrontational in forums such as NSG, we would have solved a lot of problems. Instead of saying 'Sign NPT' it would have made more sense, we support your NSG, you support our SCS.

NSG is a typical case where India refuse to comply yet yearn to be to a member so badly that they blame only China when 6 other nations including Russia also BLOCKED her entry as well.

For heaven sake, just signed the bloody NPT and India will be abmitted in the NSG through the front door. No need for any special favour.

Trying to gain entry through the backdoor simply means India has every intention to break all its promises and the rules and Indians claimed that they are law abiding.
