Gripen is no where near Russian premium fighters. It might be good in its own division, but even there its reputation is murky to say the least. There are excellent 4th and 4.5th gen fighters that are better than Gripen. Which offer more bang for buck.

South Africa, Thailand and Brazil are not examples of heavyweight airforces. It makes sense for them to opt for such a fighter or any for that matter. Russian fighters are sold to bigger and better airforces around the world.
