Good thread. The joker Amrullah Saleh aside, IMO if history is anything to go by, Taliban alone cannot govern the whole country. A natural opposition to them exists, and has existed since their inception. The only way to govern Afghanistan without continuous conflict is via a negotiated settlement and consensus.

IMO the Taliban should do what the US and the Northern Alliance failed to do, which is to build a legitimate consensus on which to chart the future political roadmap of Afghanistan. The Taliban should call a new Loya Jirga and invite everyone, including their enemies, including what's left of the Ghani government. The Bonn agreement should be revisited and corrected.

Their assurances to the international community, to the West, and to Afghanistan's immediate neighbours is a good start, but more needs to be done.

This is perhaps seems to me to be the only way forward, and even if it's not, it is still certainly the BEST way forward.

Northern Alliance? This is not the 1990s. Russia and Iran want stability in the region, hence they will work with the Taliban.

So far, the Taliban are making the right notes. The current crop seems more moderate than the Taliban of the 1990s.

Chances are less (unfortunately). I have a feeling that Indian Government may end up recognizing the Taliban terrorists. And for me, I cant do much other than hope that it doesnt happen.
