Hundreds get their sight back in Yemen
Noor Dubai Foundation conducts sight-saving operation in Yemen

More than 500 nearly blind Yemeni patients, including young people, have got their sight back thanks to the Noor Dubai Foundation and Dubai Islamic Humanitarian Foundation.

Noor Dubai’s medical team screened 7,085 patients and conducted more than 510 sight-saving operations in the town of Bajil, Al Hudaydah Governorate, in Yemen. This was Noor Dubai’s second mobile eye camp this year in Yemen, and the fifth in five years.

“The foundation first conducted a camp in January 2009 and treatment was provided to 11,000 individuals,” said Eng Eisa Al Maidour, Chairman of Noor Dubai Foundation.

Bajil is a small town in the northern part of Yemen. It is about 425km away from Aden with an estimated population of 169,884 inhabitants, of which an estimated one per cent is blind, said Dr Manal Taryam, board member and CEO of Noor Dubai Foundation.

“The main case of visual impairment in Yemen is cataract, which is normally a disease of the [elderly]. But in Yemen, many children are born with congenital cataract that needs to be surgically treated to avoid permanent visual loss,” said Dr Manal.

Dr Manal said the second camp took place late April and provided sight-saving treatment to patients who came from all over the country.

Government authorities in Yemen also supported the camp by offering a team of Yemeni doctors and optometrists.

In addition to the mobile camp, Noor Dubai tied up with the Carter Foundation for its three-year project on Trachoma Elimination. Trachoma is an eye condition resulting from an infection with chlamydia trachomatis. If left untreated, the infection eventually causes the eyelid to turn inwards, which could cause the eyelashes to rub on the eyeball, damaging the eye.

A team from Noor Dubai Foundation will visit Ethiopia this week to oversee its programmes there. The foundation aims to treat 18 million individuals over a three-year period.

To date, Noor Dubai Foundation has provided medical services and treatment to more than 8.9 million individuals globally.
