ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has unveiled Pakistan foreign policy vis a vis America.

He said Pakistan wanted to improve relations with the United States but not at the expense of its national interests.

Speaking at the floor of the Senate, the minister said weightage will be given to the opinion of the people as well as the elected representatives while taking forward relations with Washington. He said national security and the foreign policy were interlinked and “we should demonstrate unison on them.” “Political differences should be kept aside on national security and foreign policy matters. Given the challenges facing the country, only unity can strengthen our voice,” he maintained.

Responding to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Raza Rabbani’s request for reply on telephonic conservation between Prime Minister Imran Khan and US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, Qureshi reiterated, “US State Department readout regarding the phone call was contrary to facts. The conversation between PM Imran and Pompeo was cordial and constructive in nature.” The press release issued by Pakistan on the conversation is based on facts, he upheld, and also shared that Pompeo is expected to visit Pakistan on September 5.

Speaking in the Upper House, Finance Minister Asad Umer cleared the air regarding seeking a bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “The government does not intend to approach IMF for now,” he announced, adding the statement of US administration pertaining to bailout package was unnecessary. “Even if Pakistan goes to the IMF, this won’t be the first time that Pakistan has opted for the program. We have gone to the program 12 times previously,” he said.

Asad Umer acknowledged that country’s economic situation was on ‘life support’. “We will put the situation in front of public and consult the parliament before making any decision,” he maintained.

Chest thumping before the visit then US rep arrives everyone is turning up for the photo op including the PM.

Never have I heard of a sec of state meeting a PM of a country. Did Trump even call Imran to congratulate?

Tell them to **** off and wait for regime change.

Excellent stance. National interests should always be foremost regardless of the country. That should be first principle for foreign policy.

Don't forget that US and its allies (inside and outside Pakistan) will come after this Govt.

The psychological warfare has already started - Trump has chosen to ignore that IK is the new PM of Pakistan (he would have called had NS or Zardari been elected).

The first wave of attack will come via international media - we have already seen glimpses.

Well, we need to have strong nerves since it is the game of nerves..if we blink they will hit...however the more important is to keep the local media bridled and that is the achilles of heels for this govt. I have some reservations but Fawad Ch. I personally think Shaikh Rasheed will be a much better information minister than the current minister who lacks the guts.

For starters start charging transit fees on US/NATO supplies going through Pakistan.
Yes that's a practical step...until then it is empty rhetoric.

I want to know, if new govt. is going to charge transit fee to Americans and Indians?
Since when India is trading through Pakistan? Get your facts right and avoid spreading disinformation. I think as soon as Musharraf left, no Indian trade has been allowed.

Few months back i started a thread, where i posted a you tube video. Showing the volume of Indian transit.
I don't know how to search because i can't find that video on you tube anymore.

I also know that recently India transited through Pakistan even while exporting to Iran.

Witness the policy change regarding US since a while. It is clear & open to understand that the Do More has been rejected and Pakistan is pursuing towards independent policy. Rest about details of development in this regard, observe regional cooperation, building ties with countries like Russia and Pakistan succeeding to advance its relations with many countries. Currently, Afghanistan is the key word and depends how well one can play this time.

That does not make much sense as to why India is building Chabahar then?
I think it may be the trade between India and Pakistan...which is not the transit trade. BTW I will try to confirm though I'm highly skeptical of that.

not only should we start charging we should try and make it very very difficult for the americans to be there for any longer. make the transit fee as high as realistically we can. and start measures to add pressure on them. tiny drops make a sea.

You are so used to being lied by your governments that you can't take truth at its face value. For the time being let's worry about America's own national interest as defined by Trump (and Putin)

The minister is scrupulously avoiding discussion of what exactly is Pakistan's "national interest", a form of strategic political ambiguity that goes back to Jinnah.

Just 4 masses- feeding..
Army know very well that it doesn't matter how much bad relations v r having wd USA or how much good relations v r enjoying wd Russia, china etc but climax of Afghanistan is coming down 2 the street n it is utmost important 2 have working relations wd them..
