No immediate withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan: Obama

US President Barack Obama on Thursday categorically ruled out immediate withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan from July 2011, the date he had earlier set for drawdown of troops from the war torn country.

"We didn't say we'd be switching off the lights and closing the door behind us. We said we'd begin a transition phase that would allow the Afghan government to take more and more responsibility," Obama said at a White House joint press briefing with his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev.

"Here's what we did not say last year. We did not say that, starting July 2011, suddenly there would be no troops from the US or allied countries in Afghanistan," Obama said in response to a question.

That is the tragedy that was put forward and what we've also said is, is that, in December of this year, a year after this strategy has been put in place, at a time when the additional troops have been in place and have begun implementing strategy, that we'll conduct a review and we'll make an assessment, he said.

"So we are in the midpoint of implementing the strategy that we came up with last year. We'll do a review at the end of this year," he said.

Defending his decision to nominate General David Petraeus as his new war commander in Afghanistan, Obama said Petraeus understands the Afghan strategy because he helped shape it.

"My expectation is that he will be outstanding in implementing it, and we will not miss a beat because of the change in command in the Afghan theater," he said.

Keep in mind that, during this entire time, General Petraeus has been the CENTCOM commander, which means he's had responsibility in part for overseeing what happened in Afghanistan, and that is part of the reason why I think he's going to do such a capable job, Obama said.

"Not only does he have extraordinary experience in Iraq, not only did he help write the manual for dealing with insurgencies, but he also is intimately familiar with the players. He knows President Karzai. He knows the other personnel who are already on the ground," he said.

Obama said he would be insisting on a unity of purpose on the part of all branches of the US government that reflects the enormous sacrifices that are being made by the young men and women who are there.

I guess thats the whole point for General sack. General dont want their troops to die in afgan with no real ARMY gain. Obama democratic need to stay there for long period and fire the general for the obvious(Minerals, Asia base, china blockade etc.) US gain to stay in Afgan. And i guess untill the next US election they are not gonna remove the troops and this is the election compaign gimic they will play nicely. So far so true but in future no idea what will happen.

.
well the truth is USA know importance of Afghanistan and there is lots of thing to gain

the most important is from Afghanistan they can have a close eye on china and Asia other country

For those who felt Afghanistan will go back to what it was, this should be eye opener. I was telling this since long.

very true.. All the fan boy dreams of bombing Indian consulates once NATO leaves just came crashing down with a splash of cold water.:azn: USA is not going anywhere soon. 2013 will see Republicans coming back into power with a surge in the presence in Afg.

Pakistan does not have to worry about NATO if it wants to bomb Indian Consulate - Remember 2008 when your Embassy was blown?NATO was there. Not saying that it was done by Pakistan but just shows that Pakistan does not have to do it itself. We can just outsource it to some mercenaries in Afghanistan.Your RAW Officer was also killed in some recent blast - That hotel blast.Go to Bharat Bakbak and see how your fellow Indians getting worried about General David because he praised Pakistan several times.By large Afghanistan is in much better position now for Pakistan - Afghan Anti Pakistani Intel Chief Gone - Karzai is acting better now - The General in Afghanistan listens to Pakistani Concerns. It actually shows your frustration that you think you would be butchered if NATO is not there your Hijra/dickless soldiers need NATO Protection..

Good they need to stay longer.
This was expected, wasn't it? The failure of regional powers in action to stop the Taliban and other militant agencies has forced the United States to stay back. In fact, it would have been foolish of anyone to think that the Americans would so easily withdraw. All the withdrawals of Americans throughout the history has preceded with horrific full blown wars that involved in two direct militaries confronting each other.

Afghanistan has been war-ravaged since Russians withdrew and thanks to Taliban and their lunatic policies, the scope of any infrastructure development had vanished. The longer Americans stay there, the safer it is for the rest of the world to hold Talibans away. As such with their sympathizers among us in our countries 9who deserve nothing short of being stripped of our countries' passports and being expelled immediately), it is very difficult to catch.

So let the Taliban nest continue to be struck with missiles so that let the root of the militants be eradicated.

What do you think Jigs?

I think the Obama Administration shot themselves in the foot with this withdrawal date. How are you going to get people to trust you and not fear the Taliban and resist against their rule when you have a date set to leave them?(Especially with what the U.S. pulled after the soviet/afghan conflict) It is great that it looks like this will no longer be the case. The Taliban must be hunted down and destroyed. The more pressure we put on them the weaker they will get.

The people who sympathize with the Taliban are hypocrits who use them to channel their unprovoked hate towards the U.S. because of their extremist views (It also seems like the popular thing to do). They wouldn't last one week under Taliban rule and would flock right back to their greater standard of living.

The Taliban must be hunted down and destroyed. The more pressure we put on them the weaker they will get.

Pressure is the key word here. One has to understand that despite all the pressure that could perhaps crush a normally running country to bits has done little to Taliban because of the loose chain of its financial backers sitting cosily in Western countries and perhaps in other regions of the world continue to back them. Knowing quite well the location of poppy plantations in Afghanistan, neither the Afghan government nor the ISAF destroy the regions under the excuse that farmers don't have any other source of income which instead ends up in Taliban's hands through drug lords offering them protection money. This can be changed if Afghan farmers are offered agricultural programmes and advanced technologies once the poppy regions have been bombed clean and a law forbidding them permanently in place.

The people who sympathize with the Taliban are hypocrits who use them to channel their unprovoked hate towards the U.S. because of their extremist views (It also seems like the popular thing to do). They wouldn't last one week under Taliban rule and would flock right back to their greater standard of living.

 Ouch, you might hurt some people's sentiments on this forum. So tread carefully lest these members' sentiments are hurt when you criticize the Taliban and their sympathizers.
