BCL vandalises vehicle, uproots railway
Monday, May 03,2010

CHITTAGONG: Chittagong University unit Chhatra League activists on Sunday vandalised a minibus headed for the campus in the Forest Gate area and uprooted the railway near the cantonment to stop the shuttle trains from plying between the Chittagong city and the campus. They earlier damaged at least 15 vehicles and set a teachers’ bus on fire in protest at the killing of second-year accounting student M Asadizzaman, who was stabbed by a group of villagers over an altercation.

The university Chhatra League general secretary, Mohammed Ershad Hossain, on Sunday said they would continue with the strike until their demands were met.

A group of 15 Chhatra League activists damaged the minibus in the Forest Gate area in the morning, said Showkat Ali Chowdhury, station master of the Sholashahar railway station. He said the activists uprooted a railway stretch spanning three feet in the cantonment area.

‘But train communications could be restored after repairs about 10:00am,’ he said. A few classes and examinations were held on the campus on Sunday amid heightened security, campus sources said.

The police, meanwhile, on Sunday produced Sarwar Kamal Liton, 32, the prime suspect arrested in connection with the killing of M Asasuzzman, in the court after his remand in custody for five days. The chief judicial magistrate, KM Shamsul Islam, on Wednesday allowed him to be remanded in custody for five days.

No fresh bits of information could be extracted from him during interrogation,’ said Abul Hashem, a railway police subinspector who is investigating the case.

He said Sarwar during preliminary interrogation at the Hathazari police station on April 26 said he had been involved in the plan for attack on Asaduzzaman near the university railway station at night on April 15.

The Hathazari police on April 26 arrested Sarwar at Muradpur in the city and handed him over to the Government Railway Police on Tuesday. But Mohammed Abul Hashem on Sunday evening said Sarwar had made a statement in court.

The Chhatra League on April 17 enforced the strike on the campus for an indefinite period to push for their demands, including arrest of the killers of Asaduzzaman and resignation of the vice-chancellor, proctor and students’ adviser.

A group of neighbouring villagers stabbed Asaduzzaman on April 15 over an altercation that took place during the Pahela Baishakh celebrations. He died in Chittagong Medical College Hospital the next afternoon.

Earlier political science student AFM Mohiuddin was hacked to death at the Sholashahar railway station on February 11 and Harunur Rashid Kaiser was found dead near Baradighirpar on March 28.

Can anyone tell why AL-affiliated students are doing these crimes? I remember reading about this when it started (as far as I know) earlier this year. All this crap gets the party nowhere and only gives a bad....no, horrible image to the future of AL and future AL politicians.

Are the murders committed by AL or is it the property distruction?

Both Chatro Dol and Chatro League does it. There is huge money involved. It starts from Chada Baji, control of student halls for admission related money, and tender manipulation almost at every level. However, Chatro Dol got marginalized because of BNP's disastrous election performance. The thugs ( cadres) always go to the highest bidders which is AL right now. A chunk of this money is also used for political/campaign purpose, thats why you don't see Hasina/Khaleda shutting down these outfits.

Awami Leguage can not hide terror, looting and rape and can not hide behind other party. Awami League claimed to be in power because they claimed to be better than opposition. So, what is your point when Awami league is running worse than pre 75 looting, raping and terror in the country?????? Besides, Awami League is in power not other party. Are you desperate to find a place to hiding your face??? Opposition is not shelter to hide and neither is any forum.

Intelligence agencies report: 8 AL leaders behind campus unrest

Around 50 people who were found involved in tender snatching or extracting money from different quarters in the capital using the ruling party identity

Friday May 07 2010 01:12:15 AM BDT

Intelligence agencies have found eight suspected ring leaders of ruling Awami League who are allegedly partonising students unrest in different educational institutions across the country, sources said.(New Nation)

The main suspects are those political leaders who were deprived of getting nominations in the ninth parliamentary elections and also not properly evaluated even after the formation of the Awami League-led grand alliance government.

They have outstanding political background, especially a long career of doing student politics. They had close links with the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and are also very close to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the sources said."Apart from the ruling party activists - like Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Awami Jubo League - some outsiders and even a quarter of the then 'special Bhavan' and local criminals were also found involved in creating a political turmoil raising some controversial issues with a view to serving their narrow personal interests," they added.

A high official of the law-enforcing agencies hinted that the party activists along with their hardcore followers are under the strict watch of the law-enforcers as the high-commands of the law-enforcing agencies have been asked by the Prime Minister to take necessary measures in this regard within the shortest possible time.

The sources said, with a malafied intention, their followers were asked to cover some assignments to tarnish the image of the ruling Awami League goverenment. The assignments include: indiscriminate attack on law-enforcers, assaulting female teachers, launching street agitation through various pretext and ransacking vehicles.

There is a widespread allegation that ring leaders of the trouble-makers remain behind the scene, it was said in the report which will be submitted to the Government's high-up soon.

Against the backdrop of frequent intra-party clashes, admission business, forcible occupation of students' dormitories, vandalising the academic institution, assaulting female students on campuses, tender manipulation and extortion, the Government high-ups have been asked to make a list of the suspect trouble-makers in the capital and across the county.

The intelligence agencies found that some of the field-level trouble makers have actually no political ideology. They usually change their level immediately after the political changeover in the country.

The intelligence agencies have already identified around 50 people who were found involved in tender snatching or extracting money from different quarters in the capital using the ruling party identity.

Earlier, the Awami League General Secretary and LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam claimed that a unified Shibir activists have been replaced in the BCL committee. He passed such comment after an intra-BCL fighting on Dhaka University campus creating a widespread confusion in the party.

Echoing to the voice of the LGRD Minister, acting AL General Secretary Mahhub-Ul-Alam Hanif also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked the authorities concerned to take stern action against the culprit who are creating unrest and anarchy across the country using BCL identity.

A central leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) who did not want to be named told The New Nation Tuesday that some immediate-past BCL leaders were found involved in tender manipulation.

"Besides, there are some student leaders in BCL who were not seen earlier in the Awami League programme in the field during the party's tough time. Many dedicated student leaders were deprived of getting any post and position," he said.

A Jubo League leader - who was also a central committee member in Chhatra League (Shaeem-Panna) - claimed that there are some party men in Jubo League who have reportedly got central committee membership paying Taka one lakh to an influential quarter.

Party insiders said, that very guy was an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir. Earlier, he remained into hiding for several years outside the country. After his return, he managed to get a membership in Jubo League.

Talking to The New Nation, BCL General Secretary Mahfuzul Haidar Chowdhury Roton denied Chhatra League's involvement with such widespread allegation.

He added that some outsiders and anti-liberation forces entered the BCL to foil image of the BCL which had a glorious contribution to the Independence of Bangladesh.

BCL Gone Crazy

Hasina warns, MPs ignore

Friday May 07 2010 01:22:47 AM BDT

Bangladesh Chhatra League has gone beyond control as ruling party lawmakers have been ignoring Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's repeated directives to contain the unruly activities by the student body.(The Daily Star)

The unlawful and violent activities by the BCL are centred on different educational intuitions across the country under direct and indirect patronisation of local lawmakers, some of whom are even ministers.

While these leaders have been deliberately ignoring the prime minister's call for taking stern action against BCL activists involved in criminal activities, law enforcement agencies cannot also take any step against the wrongdoers because of the strong backing from these leaders.

The law enforcement agencies have informed the government about these patrons.

AL acting general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif also admitted that the allegation of patronisation by AL lawmakers is "partially" true.

"It is obvious that Chhatra League is involved in misdeeds under the patronisation of some ministers, lawmakers and party leaders in many places," he said last night. "We have recently warned these leaders in person, asking them not to interfere in Chhatra League affairs; otherwise, organisational action will be taken against them."

Hanif, also a special assistant to the PM, said police and Rapid Action Battalion have been given strict directives to take tough actions against those who are causing violence in the name of BCL or student politics.

"They have also been asked not to consider recommendations of any minister, state minister, lawmaker and party leader in favour of Chhatra League wrongdoers," he said.

Recently Barisal Polytechnic Institute, Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Jahangirnagar University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka College, Edward College in Pabna, Kushtia Govt College and many other educational institutions across the country have witnessed unruly activities by BCL workers.

The three AL organising secretaries--Jahangir Kabir Nanak, BM Mojammel Haque and Ahmed Hossain--designated by the PM to look after BCL activities have apparently failed to bring the BCL back to track.

Mojammel claimed many goons and non-students have infiltrated BCL and been involved in unruly activities. "They should be identified and punished. It is not right to blame Chhatra League as a whole," he said.

AL policymaker Obaidul Quader also demanded identifying and punishing the party leaders who are patronising BCL in resorting to tender manipulation and other unlawful activities across the country.

The patronisation begins with the formation of different BCL units, including those at universities and colleges, under influence of local lawmakers.

The president and general secretary of the newly formed committee of Pabna district unit of the BCL were picked as per the choice of a lawmaker and a state minister, a few central BCL leaders said.

In fact, half of the 22 new BCL committees in Narsingdi, Habiganj, Jhenidah, Rangpur, Panchagarh, Lalmonirhat, Bandarban, Rajshahi and other districts were formed with leaders chosen by influential AL leaders and lawmakers, said the BCL leaders.

Efforts failed to contact at least 10 ministers, state ministers and MPs of these districts, who are allegedly patronising BCL units in their areas.

On the committee of Pabna BCL, State Minister for Home Shamsul Huq Tuku told The Daily Star that it was formed as per the choice of the central Chhatra League, not his.

"But the drive will continue against criminals assuming the identity of Chhatra League or Jubo League activists," he said.

On the Habiganj district committee, local lawmaker Mohammad Abu Zahir, who is also the general secretary of the district AL, said, "I can assure that Chhatra League will not engage in misdeeds in my district."

A top leader of central BCL preferring not to be named told The Daily Star, "As many Chhatra League leaders have strong backing from some ministers, lawmakers and Awami League leaders, they do not care us and are neither accountable to us nor are in our control."

AL Presidium member Obaidul Quader suggested five measurers for bringing the BCL back to track: stern legal action against wrongdoers, corrective measurers, reconstituting all BCL committees with students, holding elections to the student unions of educational institutions, and providing jobs to those who are no more students but have been engaged in politics for long.

He said BCL activists involved in criminal activities should be brought under speedy trial act and kept in jail for a few months.
